Nebraska Democratic Party official won't resign after calling reactions to shooting at GOP baseball

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Joe Duggan

LINCOLN — A Nebraska Democratic Party official has refused calls to resign her volunteer position after calling reactions to this week’s shooting of a high-ranking Republican member of Congress “so funny” on social media.

Chelsey Gentry-Tipton of Omaha said in statement that she will not resign as chairwoman of the party’s Black Caucus, saying her post was taken out of context by party officials.

The Nebraska party’s leadership asked Gentry-Tipton to step down Wednesday, several hours after she wrote, in a Facebook thread about the shooting in Washington, D.C., “Watching the congressman crying on live tv abt the trauma they experienced. Y is this so funny tho?”

Later, in the same thread, she stated, “The very people that push pro NRA legislation in efforts to pad their pockets with complete disregard for human life. Yeah, having a hard time feeling bad for them.”

You can be frustrated all you want about Republican gun policy, but there's nothing amusing -- even darkly amusing -- about citizens shooting elected officials.

Maybe if you had included all people and not just authority figures you wouldn't be sticking out like a purple thumb.

The woman the original post was about laughed at a shooting specifically because she found it funny that pro-gun politicians were shot.

My mistake. I will assiduously avoid addressing the context of the OP in my future comments.

that Democrats would be coming to grab their phallic symbols, trying to steel themselves, brace their portly legs, hold in their voluminous beer bellies, and prepare for World War III, so sure it would have to be "out of my cold, dead hands."

The fact they are howling like banshees, trying to convince themselves that the well balanced part of the population is going to knock them off, for sure, now that someone who doesn't like Republicans finally ran amuck and dinged one, along with his defenders. They just don't have the ability to remember all the long, long decades the world has watched these right-wing ignorant, spoiled assholes who never learned to control themselves, or even even wanted to be decent like human beings, beating, insulting, lynching, terrorizing, torturing, murdering, letting their vile rage spill in all its putrid excess all over our world, our lives, destroying EVERYTHING we honor, respect, and love.

Idiots. Fools. Dirtbags.

she was being snide about the Republicans' reactions to the shooting. And who could blame her?

The people who want a gun in every purse and pocket cried harder over this than they did Sandy Hook.

but the ambivalence these same congressmen have had over the 90 lives a day we lose to gun violence is the point she is trying to make. As what seem to be typical of Republicans is that they cannot empathize or understand the struggle until it affects them personally. That same day, 3 people were killed at the UPS office in San Francisco, just another normal day that would and did get little mention. These Republicans have been pushing for everyone to have a gun, not only a gun but a killing machine. The irony writes itself. Don't get me wrong, all violence is awful but hopefully there is a silver lining on this one.

democrats should stop apologizing for anything. Do I feel sorry for the guy who got shot? not for a nanosecond. There are innocent and much more worthwile people dying everyday from shootings. That guy was not innocent. Let NRA pray for him so we don't have to. It's a matter of priorities. Shit happens.
