Square One Mall closed as SWAT team responds to armed suspect holed up in Dick's Sporting

Source: MassLive

Highway signs announced the Square One Mall in Saugus is closed Monday morning as state and local authorities respond to an armed suspect holed up inside Dick's Sporting Goods.

The incident reportedly unfolded around 4:30 a.m., when Saugus Police first responded to a break-in at the sporting goods store on Route 1 southbound. The police department released a statement around 6:30 a.m. announcing an "armed and dangerous intruder" was believed to be inside. It was later confirmed the suspect had broken into the store.

It is unclear why or how the suspect broke into the store early Monday morning. Some news reports say the intruder is carrying a long gun, one of the products sold in the sports store. Dick's Sporting Goods carries a wide assortment of recreational products, including more than 30 different kind of firearms and ammunition. On its website, the store sells at least two kinds of semi-automatic rifles.

If it like the Dick's here, they lock up the guns every night. This guy broke in before they opened. He will have access though to a lot of ammo.

Unless he came prepared, it's probably not within his capabilities. Truth is, the guy is dumb enough to get trapped in a store, he' probably not doing rocket science in his spare time.

They have maybe 30 - 40 guns to store. It's called a "gun safe". They sell them actually. Theirs is probably about 4 x 6 x 2. You'd need a cutting torch or something similar.

...which is commonly referred to as 'Sauga. I thought that was odd because there is very little gun violence in Canada.

AUGUS — A 16-year-old from Everett has been arrested after he allegedly broke into a Saugus mall and stole a gun and ammunition, law enforcement officials said.

The teenager had broken into Dick’s Sporting Goods at the Square One Mall overnight and was able to bend a rack where the gun was stored.

Saugus police were summoned to the scene at 4:20 a.m. when a burglar alarm at the store went off. The officer who responded saw a broken window.

Police, including SWAT officers, swarmed the mall and people were asked to avoid the area, but it turned out that the youth was not there. Saugus Police Chief Domenic J. DiMella said, “I’m not sure what time he left.” The mall was shut down during the investigation.
