A former government employee is facing espionage charges for allegedly trying to provide top secret documents to China.
Kevin Mallory of Leesburg, Virginia, had top secret clearance when he worked for the government. When he left in October 2012, he allegedly took documents with secret and top secret classifications on an electronic device.
He traveled to Shanghai in March and April to meet with individuals he thought worked with China's intelligence service, according to court documents.
When Mallory, who speaks fluent Mandarin, returned from Shanghai in April, he had $16,000 in his carry-on bags.
