Source: cnbc.com
Americans now say by 50 percent to 42 percent they want Democrats to control Congress after the 2018 elections, according to a new NBC/WSJ poll.
It's the largest lead any party has held on that generic ballot question since 2013.
Trump's approval rating remains at a low level of 40 percent.

As President Donald Trump continues to struggle, Democrats have moved into a stronger position to challenge Republicans for control of Congress next year, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
The survey shows that just 40 percent of Americans approve of Trump's job performance, while 55 percent disapprove. That's virtually unchanged since last month.
At the same time, Americans now say by 50 percent to 42 percent they want Democrats to control Congress after the 2018 mid-term elections. That's the largest lead either party has held on that generic ballot question in the NBC/WSJ poll since 2013, and the first time either party reached 50 percent on that question since 2008..........................

(51,432 posts)during the past year. Do people just say it when they are being polled but then when it comes time to actually voting for someone they either can't or won't? I am very frustrated with "polls".

(2,003 posts)Democrats tend to be concentrated in areas where when we win, we win big. To say 50% of voters want a Democratic congress doesn't really help us if a lot of these voters already live in places that have elected Democrats.

(21,034 posts)The GOP pissed everyone off with the shutdown and theatrics. When it came time to vote, they gained.
No one in this country has a memory it seems and will happily vote for the GOP (or not vote) instead of voting Dem.

(3,847 posts)If voters are allowed to vote, since states are purging hundreds of thouands of people off the rolls and Cross Check. It means we have to come out at 80% and overwhelm the polls and kick their asses out.

Or if we want to beat gerrymandering which is the gift that keeps on giving - to the GOP.
We already had more than 50% in 2016 and what did it get us?
Just sayin'

(109 posts)as long as the rigged voting machines and the voter suppression are not addressed. As long as the Repubs can get elected in spite of flouting the majority of Americans, there's no way the will of the people can have any discernible effect at all. Get used to it.

(11,488 posts)Repukes have done such an efficient job at stacking the deck that even in many states where well more than 50% of votes go for Democratic candidates it's the repukes who end up controlling the state legislators and sending more congress-critters to Washington. And now that we've been robbed of a seat on the Supreme Court that's going to be even harder to reconcile.
And of course we can't forget about the repuke campaign of voter suppression.... keep enough people from select groups out of the voting booth and they hang on to power.

(7,358 posts)Have Americans become so lazy that voting has become too much of a hassle? How many Americans have to be turned away from treatment and die before they think that participating in the election process is important to their lives? Health care is a human right! IT JUST DOESNT FRICKIN MATTER. Look at other metrics to determine trends.

(5,441 posts)From the article:
"Republicans retain some important advantages as both sides look ahead to 2018. By 18 percentage points, Americans say they prefer Republicans over Democrats for dealing with ISIS; they also prefer Republicans for changing Washington (by 9 points), dealing with the economy (7 points), and dealing with taxes (4 points)."
More favorable public opinion on the economy and taxes is a key to making the Democratic Party resurgent.
A pro-business policy that works through government business partnerships would be a good way to improve the economy and get the attention of moderate swing voters. Smart public policy extolling how Democratic ideas can spur small business growth by for example removing the need for small businesses to pay for health care (think single payer or public option) and increase government support for small business. Changing the tax laws to favor small businesses over big business would be another great option.

(6,206 posts)In 2010 we saw the same thing, but with voters wanting the repubs to control Congress against Obama. Many of us did not pay attention to the numbers. It appears that the current repubs are not looking at the current numbers.
