Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny can not run for presidency because of his criminal conviction, the Central Election Commission, said in a statement on Friday.
"Navalny does not have passive suffrage," said the statement, meaning he was ineligible to run for office.
Navalny was found guilty of embezzlement in February and given a five-year suspended prison sentence in a court case he says was organized to stop him running for president.

Gotta hurt, having your socialist hero propped up by a fascist dictator. Or having the fascist you love prop up a socialist thug.
They have things in common, sort of, and it nicely produces negative solidarity.
For some, allies are about power. For others, about morality. As long as the moral are powerful, it's hard to spot the difference. But when the immoral or amoral wield power, stipulating that your allies must be as righteous and moral as you is lunacy.
Stalin was horrible. Possibly worse in many ways than Hitler. And yet FDR struck an alliance with Stalin against Hitler, not because of Stalin's and the USSR's great virtue and morality but because of the need to be against Hitler. (It's unclear to me exactly how much of the USSR's initiative FDR actually disliked: Hoover dam and the large ironworks and dam construction in the USSR are very similar. But empowering the little man by centralizing power in the hands of a few who knew better and could manage the population was all the rage.)
