(6,635 posts)and NRA/ILA extremist sympathizers, we are living in an polite society. Most thinking Americans see it a bit differently, and observe that we are really living in an armed and dangerous society.
I agree: yay guns!

http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2013/05/07/181998015/rate-of-u-s-gun-violence-has-fallen-since-1993-study-says
""Firearm-related homicides dropped from 18,253 homicides in 1993 to 11,101 in 2011," according to a report by the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics, "and nonfatal firearm crimes dropped from 1.5 million victimizations in 1993 to 467,300 in 2011.
There were seven gun homicides per 100,000 people in 1993, the Pew Research Center study says, which dropped to 3.6 gun deaths in 2010. The study relied in part on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"Compared with 1993, the peak of U.S. gun homicides, the firearm homicide rate was 49 percent lower in 2010, and there were fewer deaths, even though the nation's population grew," according to the Pew study. "The victimization rate for other violent crimes with a firearmassaults, robberies and sex crimeswas 75 percent lower in 2011 than in 1993."
Pointing out that we actually DO live in a much less violent society than our parents lived in means that hopefully there is far less of an urge to do stupid shit like carry guns everywhere you go or keep a loaded gun under the bed where a child can find it.

(6,635 posts)overall homicide rate has dropped, and there have been several studies aimed at determining why. Some contributing factors appear to be an aging population (younger people are more prone to violence), better first-responder medical care, and improved emergency room procedures. Whatever the reasons, it is a welcome trend.
However, gun homicides in the US account for the largest percentage of all homicides, and the US gun homicide rate is many magnitudes greater than the rest of the civilized world combined.
The fact that there has been a drop in gun-related violence is a good thing, but there remain too many innocent victims of preventable gun violence, including suicides and child "accidents," and too many guns in the wrong hands -- especially in the public venue.

(39,171 posts)now that is a stupidly ignorant statement.
Have you looked at South America's murder rate recently? The place is awash with guns. Our gun homicide rate is 17th in the world.
