Missouri Republicans Lower St. Louis Minimum Wage From $10 To $7.70

Last edited Mon Jul 3, 2017, 09:55 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: Huffington Post

If you thought the minimum wage only moved in one direction, then Missouri Republicans have a surprise for you.

After St. Louis leaders raised the wage floor for workers within city limits, the state GOP recently passed whats known as a statewide preemption law, forbidding localities from taking such matters into their own hands. On Friday, Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens (R) said he would let the law go into effect, thereby barring cities and counties from setting a minimum wage higher than the state level.

For low-wage earners in St. Louis itself, the new law will have a startling consequence: It will actually push the minimum wage back down, from the city-approved $10 per hour to the state-approved $7.70. The downgrade is slated to take effect on Aug. 28.

For someone earning the bare minimum, thats a potential cut of 23 percent.

Of course not, but Missouri Republicans needs the working poor to give back their hard fought wage increase because -- oh c'mon you know what's comin'! -- they wants to give a new tax cut to the wealthiest citizens and another 25% tax break to businesses, so the money has to come from somewhere, right?

In Missouri, tax cuts are on the way

When Clinton was pres the economy was so FUCKING STRONG that Mikey D's had on their signs around here in Wichita a starting wage of close to 8.00 per hour just trying to get anyone to apply. That would be $11.97 per hour today using an inflation index. That was TWENTY years ago people.

SON OF A BITCH..........I hate these people with a passion that won't stop.

Let's say you work a minimum wage job (or two) and have 1 child. You want to move out of state to earn a higher wage.

Assuming you have a working vehicle to get from state A to state B:

1. Gas.
2. Rent a truck to move your stuff (or buy all new stuff when you get to state B).
3. Application fee, and 1st (and sometimes last) month's rent.
4. Deposits to get your basic utilities hooked up.
5. New food.
6. Costs/fees to enroll child in school (no, public school isn't completely free).
6. Find a job. Found a job? Great! Usually takes a week or two to get first paycheck.

This is just a basic list. I've moved before, several times. You don't just drive to a new state and start living there. It costs money, which someone who is already living paycheck-to-paycheck doesn't just have laying around.

Until I moved to Connecticut to marry wife. No way I would have married her in Missouri, but I digress. I grew up in Springfield and moved to kc for about 8 years before coming out here. My best friends still live in St. Louis. Most of them have good jobs but not all. And this just kills me. I watch Missouri news regularly because my family is still there. Greitens is a fucking asshole as far as I can tell. And so are all of the fucking republican "Christians" that live there. I am not sure I can ever move back there. Even though I am due to inherit property someday. They all suck.

Pay Congress $15 an hour?

(It's Borowitz of course)

After all, to our republican Congress, $15 an hour is more than adequate.

S Louis should pass legislation making the minimum wage $50/hr.

That would amount to 100K a year for those working 40 hrs.

Of course, it won't go into effect due to the state law, but it would be a great symbolic gesture to show low income workers who is on their side and who isn't.
