Mitt Romney now criticised by China

Source: The Telegraph (UK)

A commentary by the official Xinhua News Agency said Mr Romney's statement that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel could worsen an already tense Middle East situation.
It said that Mr Romney's "hawkish remarks" ignored the sensitive nature of Jerusalem. It said the comments disregarded the Palestinians' claim to the war-won eastern sector of the city, which was annexed by Israel in 1967 in a move that is not internationally recognised.

Mr Romney also suggested during a trip to Israel that he was open to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, something the Israelis have long sought but the US has refused to do because it would imply recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the entire city.

"Romney's remarks totally neglect historical facts and are actually irresponsible if he just meant to appeal to voters at home," Xinhua said.

I am fairly sure that China's disapproval is not going to make a dent here in the US.

A funny thing happens to conservatives when you lie to them. They're suckers to begin with, but if someone who is not a trusted conservative disputes the lie, conservatives become more likely to believe the lie.

In this case, the lie was largely for Sheldon Adelson's benefit, and it's an easy lie to tell because the Senate will never approve any move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Most Republicans probably cannot point out the two cities on a map, and are probably only dimly aware that Israel is a country at all.

But now that China got bent out of shape about it, they'll know that moving the embassy to Jerusalem is a great idea, and what could possibly go wrong?

President Obama is well aware of this phenomenon and, occasionally, one can see Vice President Biden performing an unusual two-step where he voices partial approval of Republican people, tactics, and policy.

That really confuses the already confused right-wing authoritarians, and in combination with the tax cut debacle, it is going to be very easy for Republicans to stay home and count the money they're going to make by not voting.

The corporations in China are entwined with the government, and those same corporations (thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court) have the power to spend unlimited amounts of money in the U.S. to promote the candidates of their choice, and those ads influence millions of people to vote or not to vote. What we have now is essentially a global buyer's market for U.S. politicians.

Maybe Mitt went too far and the Chinese will support Obama for president now. The election really could hinge on something that simple.

What else would a rational person call it?

How can Romney survive this debacle?

The only ones who like him after this abortion of a foreign tour of our "friends" is the Likud in Israel. All the rest of the world is thinking to themselves, "Huh? What the fuck is with this Romney guy?"

Three countries to visit. The first is a shear photo op, easy-peasy. He manages to screw up a simple PR gift so badly that the whole world's press is condemning him about it.

The second, he goes to the maelstrom of foreign affairs and quickly manages to advocate against decades of US foreign policy -- bipartisan, I might add. Many of our allies, and even China, are shocked by his lack of diplomacy.

Then, he goes to Poland, where he finds the workers universally for Obama, but finds an ally in Lech Walesa. Who knows what's going on there? Meanwhile, his position on Russia is taking on shades of the Cold War. Why doesn't he just drop the other shoe and call it the Soviet Union? And why doesn't he just cut to the chase and call Putin the Czar? That'll be great for foreign affairs.

What a maroon!?

Insulting every country you visit on a foreign tour doesn't inspire confidence. I'm sure the Obama camp are happy with the trip.

. . . is fighting the possibility of another George W. Bush Administration. If anything, Romney's looking like he'd be worse.
