Report: Trump Couldnt Find A Hamburg Hotel Room In Time For G20 Summit

Source: Talking Points Memo

President Donald Trump apparently waited too long to book a hotel room for the G20 summit in Hamburg, and other world leaders snapped up every luxury hotel in town, according to a report published Wednesday by BuzzFeed.

BuzzFeed cited local German-language outlets reporting that Trump, whose name is associated with an international hotel chain, was unable to book a room in the Four Seasons (occupied by Saudi Arabia’s King Salman) or any other luxury hotel in Hamburg by the time Trump’s staff called in search of board.

Trump’s staff is instead staying at the U.S. Consulate General in Hamburg, according to the report, and the President is staying in Hamburg’s official Senate guest house guarded by police, according to an Associated Press report cited by BuzzFeed.

The Senate guesthouse is located at the address “Schöne Aussicht 26,” or “Beautiful View 26,” near the city’s Islamic center and the Russian general consulate.

It was posted on DU a few weeks ago, and I don't believe it originated in Germany.

Possibly NYC but I can't be sure. I'll try to find the thread, and if I'm successful I'll post a link on here.

Edit: Apologies Chrysanthemum, I'm not able to find the original DU thread where this pic was posted. I know for a fact that it was posted on either June 13th or 14th but I can't remember the title or subject of the thread. One of the responders in the thread had posted the photo as part of their answer. I do love the pic though. I wish I could give credit to the original poster.

I immediately "stole" it and emailed it to a compatriate who also appreciated it, and may well have sent it on. Good! Humor is so important in this cause of resistance!

I've served in embassies and consulates. I've been on the fringes of a presidential visit and a little more involved in VP and Codels (congressional delegations). Not deeply involved, thank goodness, but, still, aware of what goes into them. Scheduling, coordination, transport, security, timing, inter-agency cooperation, mainly with the Secret Service. Hotel rooms are pretty much taken care of at the outset because the SS has to approve. My guess is that in the absence of information from the WH, the SS was unable to do its job, and the trickle down failure is inevitable.

These functions require leadership and staff, and the buffoon-in-chief has made it pretty clear that he has no intention to fill key positions or to fill them with inept political appointees.

Thu Jul 6, 2017, 05:42 PM

Most of the people I worked with - this was the 80s and 90s - were competent and professional. Many eventually became ambassadors and consuls general, and some ended up in even more senior positions. They knew their stuff and visits were child's play. Hectic and stressful but all part of the job.

So how did this happen? Failure of leadership.

They don't want him in Hamburg, and they've already booked their rooms.
The hotel owners won't bump their "ordinary" customers because Cheeto isn't worth it.

Think about that - would that ever happen here? Probably not. But we don't have a shortage of hotel rooms in our largest cities, and in Europe things are different. You really do need to plan ahead, especially for a meeting like G20.

Colossal clusterfuck, and he'll probably fire somebody because of this.
(Really he should fire himself.)

"The building boasts luxurious bedrooms and exquisite dining facilities, as well as reception areas, which are often employed for diplomatic functions.

The marble floored halls enjoy a plenty of natural light, which is tastefully accommodated by pristine white stucco decorated walls.

And while the criticism has some merit... everyone else booked in October and before. It was probably protocol and courtesy for the outgoing President to make sure the incoming President had lodgings... esp since it looked like Clinton was going to win at the time

But, HAD this administration filled the open positions at the State Department, this situation might have been easily resolved.
ALSO, they had nearly a half year to get some place to stay.
Using the BUT and ALSO, Clinton would have had lodgings taken care of. While the procrastinator-and-thief was busy doing nothing.
