Nevada dispensaries running out of marijuana; governor steps in

Source: Reno Gazette-Journal

Nevada dispensaries licensed to sell recreational marijuana are running out of pot less than a week after the legal market came to life, according to the state Department of Taxation.

On Friday, taxation officials announced that Gov. Brian Sandoval had endorsed the department's "statement of emergency," allowing state officials to consider adopting an emergency marijuana regulation that could alleviate the shortage.

The Nevada Tax Commission will vote on the regulation on Thursday.

It would be very hard to call a joint press conference when the problem is we've run out of joints.

Supply and Demand: This happened in CO and WA too; it took a long time for the market to stabilize. I was there in OR when they rolled out recreational, and it never seemed to occur there. Probably because Oregon has so much weed -- and it is SO good (I miss it). It will be interesting to see what happens when CA recreational begins.

If they bring cannabis across a state line, it immediately becomes an article of interstate commerce and is regulable by the feds. Which, as a reminder, means it falls under the purview of Boss Hogg Sessions, a man who believes "Reefer Madness" is a documentary.

There's only one solution that's going to work at such short notice: You know, in a place like Nevada, there are a shitload of people in the illicit marijuana trade. Offer all the illegal pot farmers and dope dealers amnesty if they agree to sell their holdings to the state at fair market value, and allow the growers to become licensed marijuana farmers. Test the marijuana for contaminants like PCP and illegal pesticides, and only accept it if it's clean. Mix all this pot together and sell it as the varietal "Ayuda de Emergencia." (It means "emergency relief" in Spanish.) Legal pot shops generally sell analyzed weed, where the THC and CBD content are known. Ayuda de Emergencia will be more of a grab-bag product: we know it's marijuana, we know it'll get you stoned, but past that it's anyone's guess.
