Trumps Son Met With Russian Lawyer After Being Promised Damaging Information on Clinton
Source: NY Times
President Trumps eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., was promised damaging information about Hillary Clinton before agreeing to meet with a Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer during the 2016 campaign, according to three advisers to the White House briefed on the meeting and two others with knowledge of it.
The meeting was also attended by his campaign chairman at the time, Paul J. Manafort, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Mr. Manafort and Mr. Kushner only recently disclosed the meeting, though not its content, in confidential government documents described to The New York Times.
...
Ms. Veselnitskaya, the Russian lawyer invited to the Trump Tower meeting, is best known for mounting a multipronged attack against the Magnitsky Act.
The adoption impasse is a frequently used talking point for opponents of the Magnitsky Act. Ms. Veselnitskayas campaign against the law has also included attempts to discredit the man after whom it was named, Sergei L. Magnitsky, a lawyer and auditor who died in mysterious circumstances in a Russian prison in 2009 after exposing one of the biggest corruption scandals during Mr. Putins rule.

(48,988 posts)Republican President Trump accepted Putin's denials and did not get anything substantive from him on the issue. Quite the opposite. He agreed to setting up a cyber security channel with the Russians.
They met Friday. That gives Saturday for the source(s) of this article to give the go-ahead or fill the last points needed by NYT to satisfy their journalistic criteria. Articles are often in development for a few days or weeks before they are published.
That would explain the timing of this information.

(16,423 posts)Because the corruption-scheme Sergej Magnitsky uncovered involved corrupt cops, documents stolen by corrupt agents of the Ministry of the Interior and corrupt judges awarding damages for claims based on falsified documents.
It would be pretty embarassing if Putin had to admit that the russian government is corrupt to the highest levels and that there is nobody you can trust.
Not the russian cops.
Not the russian Ministry of the Interior.
Not the russian judges.
This would reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally clash with Putin's law-and-order propaganda.
Do you want to know HOW desperate Putin is to bury this case?
Magnitsky died in jail during the trial. He was found guilty posthumously.
EDIT:
The offices of the opposition-politician Navalny were raided this week for the flimsiest possible reasons, and documents confiscated. I wouldn't be surprised if the russian cops will pull some shit with Navalny's documents.

(16,423 posts)Putin is the tough law&order-guy, the defender of all that is good, the protector of the orthodox church, the bane of the homosexuals and the death of drug-addicts.
Putin is stability and security.
Every Russian knows that Russia is corrupt, except that it can be "explained away". Now imagine the horror if the very government that is fighting corruption turns out to be corrupt.
There are regular protests against the russian government. And it's well-known that the russian elections are tampered with with bribed voters and "carousel voting" where the same voters are bused from polling-station to polling-station. I remember a case from a few years ago, when russian soldiers had to hand in their passports to their officers and the officers voted in stead of the soldiers.
Russia likes to portray itself as a bastion of civilization even though it's rotten to the core. That is all they have left: nationalism.
"We are better than you."
Imagine the horror of having to admit that you are in no way better than other countries.

Schiff is the leading Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.
"There's no reason for this Russian government advocate to be meeting with Paul Manafort or with Mr. Kushner or the president's son if it wasn't about the campaign and Russia policy,"
Mr. Schiff said after the initial Times report.
How do these Trump Crime Family gangsters & criminals get away with this type of shit?
Will Trump, Manafort, Kushner & the others EVER be questioned, under penalty of perjury, about this and other illegal meetings with Putin's Russian agents SOLELY FOR THE PURPOSE OF DAMAGING HILLARY CLINTON & THE DEMOCRATS?
Trump is on record saying, many times, I CAN DO ANYTHING I WANT!
(So far, he's absolutely right)

(48,988 posts)They won't be able to maintain the cover story in the same detail and one will crack and squeal on the others.
Maybe Kushner since he is quasi-independent despite marriage to Ivanka. He also has his own financial troubles that he might think will be solved by distancing his brand from the Republican-Trump brand.
{excerpt}Kushner has been under investigation after failing to disclose his own meetings with Russian officials during Trumps transition in December, and the Times found this new revelation through a revised version of a form that Kushner filled out to receive a government security clearance.{/excerpt} http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/entry/donald-trump-jr-met-with-russian-lawyer-after-being-promised-damaging-intel-on-hillary-clinton-report_us_59629482e4b0615b9e926ea0
Mini-Trump is family and presumably wants to inherit, so he's unlikely to shit on the family business.
Manafort has probably decided his business interests lie with right wing Eastern European & Russian politics. But he might break if the option for standing pat is jail time. On the other hand he might bolt to Russia and burn his bridge to the USA.

This is the closest thing to evidence of Trump-Russian collusion that has been revealed to this date, and heavily indicates that the knowledge of the conspiracy does in fact go all the way to the top two members of Trumps family would not attend such a meeting without knowledge of the patriarch..............

(3,613 posts)There were probably a thousand people looking to meet with Junior. Just in case Trump won, they would have a fast track to a meeting with Trump. That is what every lobbyist in DC does for their 7 figure salaries.
Junior had to have layers and layers of staff to filter out those people.
So why did he take the meeting?
For all we know, Junior could have initiated the meeting. Bigly problem for Junior.
Kushner could have pushed it. If so, he is gone.
Manafort? Did he do it for a fee. Meh. Did he do it with knowledge of how illegal it was? Just add it to the mountain of evidence against Manafort. Does not make a difference at this point.
Hopefully there are tapes, or else Manafort is taking one for the team.
