Military plane crashes in Mississippi, killing at least 5
Source: Chicago Tribune
Officials say a military transport plane has crashed in Mississippi's Delta region, killing at least five people aboard.
Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks tells The Associated Press that a C-130 military transport crashed Monday about 85 miles north of Jackson.
Banks tells The Greenwood Commonwealth that at least five of the nine people supposed to be aboard have been confirmed dead.
Officials did not have information on where the flight originated or what branch of the military it belongs to.

(16,829 posts)" the plane was being tracked by air traffic controllers in Memphis and suffered a structural failure at 20,000 feet that caused it to plunge into the field"
"the jet was a military C-130, a large, four-engine turbo prop plane"

(4,432 posts)C-130 structural failure in normal use is extraordinarily rare.
For the life of me I can't imagine what type of structural failure occurred- a C-130 has a very long history of military service, and maintenance usually finds structural issues long before a failure occurs.
How did they know the C-130 was having some kind of structural failure? They must have had radio contact with the plane as it descended- and I am betting there is information in that radio message that must discuss this. Normally C-130 military planes do NOT have flight data recorders that are common and required on civilian transport category passenger aircraft.
I am looking forward to hearing more about this one!

(4,432 posts)This was a Marine Corps C-130 refueling plane. The Marines began receiving C-130J's in 2003.
I do not know for sure that ALL Marine C-130 refueling planes are C-130J's now, but there are only 3 squadrons of them, so it figures that there are only newer ones around.
I will try and research if this is a newer C-130J, or an older model.

(5,103 posts)was the firefighting bird which lost both wings on a drop. This was an old and tired bird like most firefighters get.
The only part missing from the crash site is the left horizontal stabilizer
She came in hard, whatever caused it.
Semper Fi Marines!

(347 posts)Loss of elevator control. Or a stall like the Air France Airbus. Maybe the cargo got loose and slid back, like in the Baghram accident a few years back. It sucks.

A U.S. military plane crashed in rural Mississippi on Monday evening killing at least 16 people, a regional emergency management official said.
No official details were immediately available on the circumstances of the crash in northern Mississippi's LeFlore County, about 100 miles (160 km) north of Jackson, the state capital.
Captain Sarah Burns, a spokeswoman for the Marine Corps, said only that a U.S. Marines KC-130 Hercules transport aircraft had "experienced a mishap," with news media initially reporting five confirmed deaths.
Several hours later, Fred Randle, LeFlore County director of emergency management, told Reuters that at least 16 people had perished. Randle gave no further details of the incident.
WSOC-TV in Charlotte reported, citing the Federal Aviation Administration, that the flight originated from Cherry Point, North Carolina, where a Marine Corps air base is located.
