Jimmy Carter hospitalized after collapsing while working on Habitat for Humanity house

Source: The Hill

Former President Jimmy Carter was reportedly hospitalized after he collapsed on Thursday while working on a Habitat for Humanity Home in Winnipeg, Canada.

A spokesperson for the organization told CBC News that Carter, who is 92 years old, was hospitalized as a precaution.
"He encourages everyone to stay hydrated and keep building," the spokesperson told the news outlet.

Carter was treated for dehydration.

32. He never made me ashamed, ever, either.

Ongoing high-priority concern for human rights - to which he gave WAY more than just lip-service, and after he left office, became an world-class exemplary role model for compassion, sterling character, and true class. And the only "scandal" there was on his watch that I can recall involved his dumb-ass brother Billy, beer, and the proper place to relieve oneself after imbibing. That "scandal" was a pimple compared to the Mount Everest of genuine scandals we slog through every day, with this so-called "presidency" now.

Yes, lots of water all of the time to keep dehydration away especially around here.

10. Good works

He really has promoted that organization greatly, he has had a marvelous life after the presidency. His Carter Center has had a tremendous impact on the Guinea worm disease in Africa along with other organizations his center has worked with. It is close to being eradicated.

Incidences of Guinea worm disease have been reduced from an estimated 3.5 million in 1986 to 25 in 2016.

33. Indeed. Just compare, shall we?

The much-maligned Jimmy Carter did what, shortly after leaving office? His first acts? Joining up with Habitat for Humanity, and putting his own hammer and nails where his mouth was.

The man who beat him in 1980, went on to two terms, and is lionized and damn near sainted by a lot of red-state America? What did he do immediately after leaving office? HIS first acts? Straight-up moneygrubbing. He even talked about it BEFORE he left office - referring to his post-White House destination of "the mashed-potato circuit" of speech-making for big bucks. His lead-off speech-making trip? A TWO-MILLION-DOLLAR all expenses paid speech-making junket to Japan.

Hit the road to do unpaid charity work versus hit the road for the biggest paycheck. That right there tells you the main difference between Democrats and republi-CONS. That, right there.

and many more years with us.

My first inkling of what certain voters really wanted in politics came from how they treated Carter. They claimed that they wanted a true Christian, an honest politician, blah blah blah. They HAD everything on their wish list in Carter, but they voted for Reagan (who hadn't been in a church for decades, had been divorced, was head of a union, was a Hollywood insider, etc.). That was a real WTF wake-up call for me.

Farther downthread I commented about Mr Carter: "That dude's gonna drop dead swingin' a hammer."

What I mean by that is, there's no way you're going to stop a man like that from going to work.

I tell my Dad to take it easy, and I'm sure they're telling Mr Carter to take it easy. But I don't see it happening.

59. I am well aware of the determination of someone who reaches those ages.

There is a lot of stubborn used to live that long.

I took care of a gentleman in his 80s who fell out of the top of his barn and broke his neck. He was not paralyzed but had a halo brace on. Initially his daughter thought that the nurses were judging her for letting him get hurt like that. I asked her if he climbed up there by himself, he did. I then asked her if she kept him tied in a chair at home and she laughed and said no. If he could get up there by himself, what could she do????

I do understand. The thought of living in a world without Jimmy Carter is tough for me.

In the original meaning of christs word. I was brought up in catholic schools for my first six grades of school, Where I learned how to duck from those nasty yardsticks the nuns would use as weapons. BUT Pres Carter IMHO was just to kind of a man for the office of president, I remember how vicious the repubulicans were to him, I will never forget briefly meeting him while I was with the red cross helping deliver food days after katrina.

while stiffing small contractors in doing so. And after they are built, he racially profiles the applicants to deny people of colour.

The other builds homes for the poor and needy.

And yet RW Christians adore the former and think the latter was a weak leader.

As a Christian, I cannot tell you how much I admire THIS man. There are fakes and there are the authentic, and this man is the real deal.

He never needed anyone to "lay hands on him" (which is complete and utter blasphemy anyway, in my opinion). It was a showcase moment for Trump.

President Carter has lived a life of witness by showing compassion and respect for his fellow man in all that he has done. He represents the true qualities of Christianity.

My hope is that he recovers quickly.

79. you should see him at a Habitat worksite

When he was in Fort Worth for the blitz build, he spent the morning carrying 2 x 4 boards into the house he was working on. Our house was uphill and we could see everything. He was moving all these 8 foot long 2 x 4s like they were popsicle sticks. Then he put them through the table saw. Rosalyn was painting trim around the front door. It is a wonder we got anything done, because we were watching that house!!!

He told us Rosalyn wouldn't let him work on rooftops anymore. (this was at breakfast that morning) I did not get to meet him but did get to be in the same room (large tent, actually) when he opened the build and spoke to us for a few minutes.

81. It's funny, isn't it, how greatness may come at different times in a person's life.

I didn't think Carter was a great president by any means, though he did do some good things.

But after he left office...man, talk about a profile in courage and character.

Here's a man and a woman, because Roslyn is great as well, who can look back on their lives and smile, knowing the world is a MUCH better place because they lived.

By the way, I'm glad Roslyn won't let him work on rooftops any more. Gotta draw the line somewhere...

70. Jimmy, raising funds for H4H at this point is enough

You've done plenty of work at raising roofs.

May the God President Carter worships and honors grant him a speedy recovery and many more years of worthwhile, decent, and exemplary life.

74. Get well soon, President Carter.

A great, GREAT man who was screwed over by the GOP.

My mother, the most REPUBLICAN woman (although if asked, she doesn't know why ) in the entire world, says Jimmy Carter was "too nice" to be President, and that's about the biggest compliment she's ever payed a Democrat, or a Republican, for that matter!

He certainly IS a very nice man, and one who definitely "walks the walk".

Here's wishing you a speedy recovery, Mr. President.

Former US President Jimmy Carter out of hospital in Canada
Updated 4:54 pm, Friday, July 14, 2017

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter was back at a Habitat for Humanity worksite Friday, a day after he was hospitalized for dehydration while working with the organization to build homes for needy families in Canada.

A smiling Carter showed up in blue jeans and a work shirt to the site in the St. James neighborhood of Winnipeg, where hundreds of Habitat for Humanity volunteers joined the former president and his wife, Rosalynn, to build 25 homes.

Carter, 92, was discharged earlier in the morning from St. Boniface General Hospital where he was treated "as a precaution" for dehydration, Carter spokeswoman Deanna Congileo said.

"He and Mrs. Carter extend their appreciation for the many well-wishes he received worldwide," Congileo said.

Jimmy Carter is the definition of a real Christian a living example. The world is a better place by his presence.

89. He and his wife are true Christians

Unlike my right wing evangelical "Christian" siblings who told me years ago
that I'll be burning in Hell as they party in Heaven.

(Major reason I converted to Buddhism)
