Brazil to open up 860,000 acres of protected Amazon rainforest to logging, mining and farming

Source: Independent

The Brazilian environment ministry is proposing the release of 860,000 acres in the National Forest of Jamanxim for agricultural use, mining and logging.

The government’s order was a compromise measure after protests from local residents and ecologists who claim that the bill could lead to further deforestation in the Pará area.

If approved, the legislation will create a new protection area (APA) close to Novo Progresso. Around 27 percent of the national forest would be converted into an APA, the ministry said.

Carlos Xavier, president of a lobbying group in Pará to decrease the size of the Jamanxim forest, said the APA would bring economic progress to the region.

for millions and possibly billions on this planet, and with the Larsen C shelf have broken off, and the Arctic having rain above the circle, and Greenland showing more and more land mass, and the water temperature's going up, killing the plankton, and the pine trees of North America in the Mountains going to higher elevation to stay not only cool but to get moisture---------------we are screwed, we know not to do it, but we still do it............................what is wrong with us

Also, rainforest land is useless once the trees are gone. The ground basically turns into concrete.

that humans should just continue to multiply and spread unchecked over the remaining wild spaces of the world.

Because that's the logical conclusion of your remark.

How about more birth and population control instead, to stop overloading the planet?

If there is a god, I think they would want responsible caretaking of their creation, not untrammeled destruction.

Is that it is hypocritical for people who live in land that was once forested (and is fed from farmland that was once forest) to condemn other people for wanting to do the same thing.

Call it first world privilege.

In 1630, the estimated area of U.S. forest land was
1,023 million acres or about 46 percent of the total
land area. Since 1630, about 256 million acres of forest
land have been converted to other uses—mainly
agricultural. Nearly two-thirds of the net conversion
to other uses occurred in the second half of the 19th
century, when an average of 13 square miles (mi2
) of
forest was cleared every day for 50 years. By 1910,
the area of forest land had declined to an estimated
754 million acres, or 34 percent of the total land area.
In 2012, forest land comprised 766 million acres, or
33 percent of the total land area of the United States.
Forest area has been relatively stable since 1910, although
the population has more than tripled since then.

Brazil's Environment Min proposes shrinking Amazon reserve
Updated 7:14 pm, Friday, July 14, 2017

SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil's Environment Ministry is proposing to open up 860,000 acres of a protected reserve in the Amazon to logging, mining and agricultural use.

The bill reducing the size of the National Forest of Jamanxim was sent to Congress Thursday. It comes after President Michel Temer vetoed legislation that would have reduced protections on a larger parcel of land following pressure from environmental groups and supermodel Gisele Bundchen.

Activists worry that fewer protections will lead to increased deforestation when Brazilian rain forests are already being cut at the fastest rate in nearly a decade.

The Environment Ministry said Friday that the bill includes measures to prevent deforestation and will reduce land conflicts and promote jobs. Land conflicts are rising, partially because of incursions by loggers and farmers into protected areas.
