White House Analyzes Plan That Would Dramatically Speed Up Deportations

Source: Slate

President Donald Trump’s administration is analyzing whether to implement a new policy that would make it much easier to quickly deport illegal immigrants from the United States, reports the Washington Post. Since 2004, the Department of Homeland Security has had the authority to quickly deport immigrants who have been illegally in the country for less than two weeks and were detained within 100 miles of the border. But under the new policy currently being analyzed as part of a broad overhaul, Homeland Security’s expedited-deportation power would extend to illegal immigrants apprehended anywhere in the country who cannot prove they have been inside the United States for more than 90 days.

The new policy, which would not require approval from Congress, was part of a 13-page memo that made the rounds at the White House in May. So far, no final decisions have been made. “The potential changes would allow DHS to more efficiently use resources to remove persons who have been illegally present for relatively brief periods of time while still observing due-process requirements,” a Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman told the Post.

Immigrant rights’ advocates, however, disagreed with that assessment, saying the proposal would hurt the rights of immigrants and make it harder for them to seek asylum. “This is a radical departure from current policy and practice, which takes one giant step towards implementing Trump’s deportation force across the nation,” said Marielena Hincapié, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center. Lee Gelernt, the deputy director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Immigrants Rights Project, said that expanding the power of Homeland Security would amount to a “recipe for disaster” that could be the prelude to “mass deportations.”

Trump's continued pursuit of ethnic cleansing policies should really consolidate his support among his base supporters, Fox News, Brietbart, Rush Limbaugh and Infowars. They are going to be really pumped.

Plus, with Betsy Devos going down the Handmaiden route by standing up for men who are falsely accused of sexual assault (which is apparently due to women being to quick to pull the trigger and report rapes), Trump is doubling down on appealing to his base.

DeVos meets with "men's rights" groups on campus sexual assault

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has indicated that she will loosen Obama-era guidance and practices on the department's pursuit of campus sexual assault cases. She met Thursday with survivors' advocates and feminist groups, as well as three so-called "men's rights" groups, to advise her on this process, drawing criticism and concern from the survivors and advocates.

As Slate reported, one of these, the National Coalition for Men, has published the personal information of women who have accused men of rape, and its leader has labeled women the instigators of domestic violence. The second, SAVE: Stop Abusive and Violent Environments has lobbied against domestic violence protections. And Families Advocating for Campus Equality takes the position that current campus sexual assault guidelines are skewed against the accused.

Candice Jackson, whom DeVos appointed as the top enforcer of sexual assault cases at the Department of Education, seemed to agree with that position in remarks to The New York Times on Wednesday. Campus rape "accusations — 90 percent of them — fall into the category of 'we were both drunk,' " she said in part. She apologized later that same day, calling the remarks "flippant."

In a rare press availability after Thursday's meeting, DeVos told reporters that "lives have been ruined" by allegations of sexual assault.
