U.S. Secret Service rejects suggestion it vetted Trump son's meeting

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Secret Service on Sunday denied a suggestion from President Donald Trump's personal lawyer that it had vetted a meeting between the president's son and Russian nationals during the 2016 campaign.

-snip-

"Well, I wonder why the Secret Service, if this was nefarious, why the Secret Service allowed these people in. The president had Secret Service protection at that point, and that raised a question with me," Jay Sekulow, a member of the president's legal team, said on Sunday on the ABC news program "This Week."

In an emailed response to questions about Sekulow's comments, Secret Service spokesman Mason Brayman said the younger Trump was not under Secret Service protection at the time of the meeting, which included Trump's son and two senior campaign officials.

"Donald Trump, Jr. was not a protectee of the USSS in June, 2016. Thus we would not have screened anyone he was meeting with at that time," the statement said.

2. Honest mistake or slip of the tongue

Mr. Sekulow?

Trump was in the building, so USSS was wherever Trump went. Why does Trump's mouthpiece think that USSS had the duty to vet the participants in this meeting?

11. I keep thinking the same thing...great minds I guess.

Perhaps there were 9 or more people there. I wouldn't be surprised if he came down the dumb waiter at Trump Tower from his penthouse.

4. If the Secret Service had to vet everyone near the president...

... who had potentially "nefarious" plans, Trump would be sitting alone in his office wondering where all his family and associates had gone.

22. And even *if* they had been present at the time...

I don't think it's their job to turn away people who are *on a list* as having a scheduled meeting at the venue.

It was in Trump Tower. There probably wasn't even a list. If someone important (like the owner of the building's son) meets them in the lobby and takes them into a private room, how's that supposed to set off alarms?

Is there a security station in TT now where all entrants are being patted down and x-rayed and asked what their business is at this *hotel with a restaurant*?

12. Well, they didn't deny screening the meeting

Only that DJT the Lesser wasn't on their protectee list at the time.

If Sekulow is right and SS did screen the attendees, that could mean that DJT was in attendance.

Pick your poison. Either Sekulow lied (shocker) or he spoke when he shouldn't have.

a STUPID liar. This should have been obvious, or at least he should have checked it with--you know--the Secret Service. Just like Reuters did.

19. I wonder if we can blame the SS for the lack of manners and integrity of Trump?

Maybe we can blame the for the life of corruption Don Jr has been exposed to, maybe the SS should have controlled the interactions with his children.
