Al Gore: Trump is first president to deliberately 'tear down America's standing in the world'

Former Vice President Al Gore appeared on NBC’s Today on Monday to discuss his deep disappointment with President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord.

Gore noted that he had a meeting with Trump late last year where he came away optimistic that the president wouldn’t hastily withdraw from the Paris deal, if for no other reason than it would hurt America’s standing as a world leader.

Now, however, he doesn’t have any optimism that we’ll see any kind of leadership from Trump on addressing climate change.

“We’ve never had a president who’s deliberately made decisions… to tear down America’s standing in the world,” Gore told Willie Geist. “The climate crisis is by far the most serious challenge we face. But he’s also undermined our alliances, such as NATO, and hurt our standing in the world in many ways.”

2. Make no mistake: The GOP's ultimate goal is America's isolation.

And with Trump at the helm, they might get their wish.

3. Sad that Trump doesn't take advice from smarter people.

Al Gore, an American patriot who won the popular vote and should have been President, trying to talk sense to an orange buffoon who was illegitimately installed in the White House. He and his wrecking crew are destroying our country from the inside out.

Clearly, he has all the answers and we should just sit down and shut up.

6. Lockbox

We laughed at the "lockbox" term, but it wasn't funny when the trasury was raided for tax cuts and foreign wars starting in 2000. He was sooooo correct.

"I said I wouldn't touch the Trust Fund unless there was a war, recession or national emergency (9-11). I just hit the trifecta!"

7. These are very creepy times for us. It's still nightmarish.

It has been a nightmare since the election was swindled to him (and the GOP) on that November night.
I just don't know how our economy is handling this.

Deregulation. Lower taxes for upper brackets. Lower corporate taxes. If they lose DT, they get Pence...maybe even better.

8. I can't help but wonder just how much better off we'd be today

If the SCOTUS hadn't shut down the counting, and Al Gore had been our President?

Allies that we've had for decades (and in some cases centuries) are questioning our reliability as a partner in the world, and long time adversaries who border on the despotic side of things are now becoming more "trusted" by this administration.

Really sad.

17. Got that right...SCOTUS threw the election. Brexit people

were telling me before the election that they didn't need the EU, they had NATO. Well, it depends on which thoughts are placed in DT'S head at a given moment. Merkel got it...the EU better have a Plan B. DT is not dependable. The Brits still don't, even after DT said, more or less, we go with who has the most to offer.

23. So do we all...

And your observation gets right to the heart of exactly what's happening now. You'd think that a man of Trump's age would remember the Cold War - and the decades we had an adversarial relationship with - and feared - the USSR. In such a short time, he has managed to alienate pretty much every one of our closest allies. It boggles the mind.

Welcome to DU, Sluggeaux! We're glad to have you with us!

10. There is a pattern here with Trump.

Trump is so hungry for compliments he is willing to troll for good press. I have no doubt this is a standard operating procedure. He discusses health care with Obama and seems ready compromise then is ready to gut it reverses all the good things he said about Obama. I could see him doing the same thing with Gore and the Paris accord. Bottom line world leaders you cannot believe a word Trump utters. You think this liar will honor NATO Treaty obligations? Think again.

However Bannon gets the last private word ALWAYS - and he's truly evil.

Bannon is the one with all the sinister plans and politics, Trump is just the mouth piece.
That's why you see Trump waffling on these things.

20. Ah, I like how he said there would challenges "in the months ahead"

That makes it sound like he acknowledges that Trump may not last the full term.

With all this news coming out that the DOJ is dismissing lawsuits in favor of the Russians and there was obvious collusion, I bet it's now fully realizeable that Trump is going to make history when leaving office in a disgusting and disgraceful way.

In the meantime, LOOK what we could have had! He could have taken Clinton's surplus and put it to good use instead of Middle East wars for the "oilgarchs". The ice shelf Larsen C just separated like he predicted 10 years ago -- just watched his movie "An Inconvenient Truth" again, and he mentions those ice shelves in his movie. I miss the smart people.
