(1,579 posts)other parts of the brain. The main tumor, if removed, grows back rapidly. This is why they are impossible to treat. My uncle died from a glioblastoma. He knew something was up before he was officially diagnosed. I think McCain did, too. I've never had a routine physical where I was given scripts for lab, mammogram, and, oh, a brain scan.

She lived 6 months after surgery and she was never the same.
Still wound up dying of it in 6 months. So did Ted Kennedy. McCain will do the same.
We should have let her go at the 1st diagnosis.

As of right now the republican death bill is not going anywhere, and hopefully that will buy us time to at least take back one of the houses in 2018, to stop the republican insanity.
The problem with Arizona is that their Governor is an extreme right winger, and if mccain steps down there is no doubt he will appoint a right winger if mccain steps down.
Your position is perfectly understandable

He has an opportunity to settle the healthcare debate by shaming his gop colleagues and coming to the senate to vote no. Imagine the powerful message of an ailing mc cain on the floor of the senate knocking some sense into the gop.

The office for the 80-year-old McCain, the Republican nominee for president in 2008 and a U.S. senator representing Arizona since 1987, released a statement from the Mayo Clinic announcing that, after undergoing a procedure to remove a blood clot from above his left eye last week, Subsequent tissue pathology revealed that a primary brain tumor known as a glioblastoma was associated with the blood clot.
The Senator and his family are reviewing further treatment options with his Mayo Clinic care team. Treatment options may include a combination of chemotherapy and radiation.
This is a developing story. It will be updated.

(54,302 posts)It's a death sentence. No cure. They can delay the inevitable (Ted Kennedy had this, too), but it's not curable.
My brother-in-law had it, too. He was diagnosed at 48, told he had six months at best. He quit his job, took daily hikes in the woods, went sailing, lived two and a half years, which amazed his doctors, but it only put off the inevitable. He never lived to see his 52nd birthday.
They can make McCain comfortable for a while, maybe he can even resume his Senate duties for a few months, depending on how well he responds to whatever treatment they decide to try. But there is no exit from this. All his insurance and all his money won't get him a cure for a glioblastoma. There is none.

(16,884 posts)....make decisions that are rational and coming from a fully functioning brain. This tumor fully explains some of McCain's strange behavior and bizarre questioning of Comey and answers to other interviews in recent months. It won't get better, only worse.
The question is of course, how long does he have even with the best healthcare and treatment the Mayo Clinic can offer - 3, 6, 9 months? And does he want to spend it with his wife and children and friends? Doing for example as your Brother in law did and living his life, whatever is left, as best he can with those he loves and love him. Or does he try to "work" and be a Senator for his constituents, where he may or may not necessarily be functioning properly with all his faculties and decision making? Then again, we have currently the occupant of the White House who isn't necessarily functioning properly with all faculties and decision making....
What a mind fuck this all is.....
Bradical79
(4,490 posts)with the latest treatments. 15 months on average, of course it also depends on a number of variables. Like how advanced it is.
DFW
(54,302 posts)Once an initial tumor is removed, one can function normally for many months. It always comes back, of course, and at some point, it takes over parts of the brain without one cannot live. It is then declared to be operable no further, and nature takes its course.
But as with my brother-in-law, and indeed with Teddy Kennedy and others I have known with this, if the first operation to remove what is visible is successful, the victim can function normally for months afterward, in rare cases even a year or two. But it ALWAYS comes back. Symptoms like epilepsy, incoherency, rapidly deteriorating motor functions and others manifest themselves. My brother-in-law, at the end, lost even the ability to swallow water and would have died of dehydration without intravenous water supplements.
McCain, curiously, now has the chance to go out as a hero of a people whose voice he has finally heard, or as McConnell's lackey. Either way, he is departing this world, and sooner rather than later unless he manages to beat all odds. I would not want to place any bets on his choosing the nobler path, but I have no objection to being pleasantly surprised, either.

(54,302 posts)McCain's Republican colleagues seem more in tune with what Alan Grayson claimed their health care motto to be so many years ago: "stay healthy or die quickly." (1,017 posts)Glioblastoma - though there are subtypes, I believe. McCain's confusion at the Comey hearing was very similar to the first symptoms of my friend, last October. He lives out of state, but I got a chance to see him this last weekend and the decline was noticeable. He lost his speech within days of his initial confusion and subsequent dx. Had surgery, radiation, then chemo (pill form). He was able to speak pretty well after the radiation, but now, no more. A few words. Weak. Going back for more surgery and a chemo wafer this week.
Given my friend's condition, I doubt McCain will come back to the Senate. It is very sad.
Sadly, I've heard of worse cases with this extremely fast growing cancer. Someone was driving down the freeway and had such a bad headache he stopped the car and called 911. He died a few weeks later at UCSF. So much depends on which part of the brain, if operable and what brain activities it affects. That is my understanding.

(92,061 posts)What they did is organize through the christian coalition to spread the lie that mccain sired an out of wedlock child who was African American. They were tapping into the virulent racism that permeates the republican party in SC, and they were successful.
What Atwater's legacy was, and what he passed down to Rove and the republicans was to utilize blatant racism lies against Michael Dukakis, saying that he would "strip the bark off the little bastard", where referring to Dukakis, and making Willie Horton his running mate.
Atwater utilized the racism of the Southern strategy to its fullest racist extent, and embraced the politics of personal destruction.
As for the "regrets" that Atwater had, and the apology that he offered when he knew he was terminal, I suspect it was more because he knew he was going to meet his maker than anything else. I do not think he would have been remorseful at all if he wasn't terminal, and his racist legacy is the center of the republican party
Not a supporter of his politics, but the big C is a tough deal.

(10,823 posts)A family friend was diagnosed with the same thing but his surgeons were unable to remove the tumor. He's been given 12-14 months with initial radiation and followup chemo. The problem with these tumors is that they're aggressive and send spidery threads throughout the connective tissue. So, even when the primary tumor is excised, you rarely get it all, as in destroy every cancer cell.
