Microsoft is planning to kill off Paint after 32 years

Source: The Guardian

Microsoft’s next Windows 10 update, called the Autumn (or Fall in the US) Creators Update, will bring a variety of new features. But one long-standing stalwart of the Windows experience has been put on the chopping block: Microsoft Paint.

First released with the very first version of Windows 1.0 in 1985, Paint in its various guises would be one of the first graphics editors used by many and became a core part of Windows. Starting life as a 1-bit monochrome licensed version of ZSoft’s PC Paintbrush, it wasn’t until Windows 98 that Paint could save in JPEG.

With the Windows 10 Creators Update, released in April, Microsoft introduced the new Paint 3D, which is installed alongside traditional Paint and features 3D image making tools as well as some basic 2D image editing. But it is not an update to original Paint and doesn’t behave like it.

Now Microsoft has announced that, alongside Outlook Express, Reader app and Reading list, Microsoft Paint has been signalled for death having been added to the “features that are removed or deprecated in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update” list.

I have to find a way to archive it, so when Microsoft deletes it I can reload it from my copy.

It's so great for cropping and resizing, converting to different formats, and other operations.

I really am going to take the time to learn Linux Mint. I burned a boot/install disc,
and it is a nice smooth system, so on my aging Vista machine it will be a dual boot.

Setup for the Wifi will be a challenge, as will installing bookmarks. Finding time to do
these things is also a problem. But it is time to be more computer universal, adding
skills in Quickbooks, LibreOffice.

e.g.someone in a photo with a distracting logo t shirt, or a good photo but you want the focus to be on the person not the intruding stereo. I hope the new version at least allows that.

I'm Gmail all the way. I like the fact that, should I ever have the courage to trash Comcast, I've still got email. I LOVE the way it segregates promotional shit and spam-like stuff from my regular inbox and lets me decide what to read when I have time. (Normally I dump the whole mess.) I like not getting so many sidebar ads. I'm just a fan.

Is just a overlay for Paint, is it not?

IOW, it won't work without having Paint on the PC. If that is so, what happens to .net when Paint gets removed?

I use Paint.net almost exclusively these days. It is a major-awesome program.

Paint is a program that can keep a 5 year old distracted for about 3 minutes, beyond that it doesn't have any useful features.

Hard to imagine anything being dependent on it's (lack of) features.

And free.

I've used it for quick editing for over a decade. Crop, adjust colour, batch convert - indispensible for resizing for web & email. On top of this, Irfan seems like a great guy (from his website).

About
Paint.NET is free image and photo editing software for PCs that run Windows. It features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. An active and growing online community provides friendly help, tutorials, and plugins.

It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. Originally intended as a free replacement for the Microsoft Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple image and photo editor tool. It has been compared to other digital photo editing software packages such as Adobe® Photoshop®, Corel® Paint Shop Pro®, Microsoft Photo Editor, and The GIMP.

Gimp is quite advanced -- it is like photoshop.

Paint Net is an easier program. Similar to MS Paint but like a step up. Here's a link to the first in a series of videos:

Yeah, there are other free programs out there, but I don't have the time to research them or learn how to use them.
