Activists protest challenges to undocumented youth

Source: MSN/USA Today

AUSTIN — Fifteen protesters were arrested Wednesday in downtown Austin — including four undocumented youths — after blocking traffic to protest Texas’ attempts to challenge the federal program protecting minors brought to the U.S. illegally.

Protesters sat in the street just outside the State Capitol building tying up traffic for about 20 minutes as local and state police rerouted motorists away. The activists were later led away in handcuffs.

The protesters were denouncing efforts by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to challenge the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, which protects youth brought to this country illegally from deportation. Paxton is leading officials in 10 other states to challenge the program in the courts.

“We’re not just here for the youth, we’re here for everyone,” said Miriam Zamudio, 23, a Rutgers University student and one of the DACA youth arrested. “Without us, this country isn’t anything.”

Kudos to the protestors who are engaging in non-violent protests to bring attention to those who are being harmed by the inhumane policies of the Trump administration.

I know someone who is DACA and she is so very careful with everything she does.

There are plenty of US citizens who are willing to protest.
