Police chiefs association refutes Trump's speech that endorsed officer brutality
Source: RawStory
President Donald Trump on Friday told a cheering crowd of police officers that they shouldnt be afraid to rough up suspects during arrests.
When you see these towns and when you see these thugs being thrown into the back of a paddy wagon, you just see them thrown in, rough, I said, please dont be too nice, Trump said during a speech at Suffolk County Community College. Like when you guys put somebody in the car and youre protecting their head, you know, the way you put their hand over, like, dont hit their head and theyve just killed somebody dont hit their head. I said, you can take the hand away, okay?
In the wake of Trumps remarks, the International Association of Chiefs of Police released a statement reiterating that police officers should not use needless violence while arresting suspects.
Law enforcement agencies develop policies and procedures, as well as conduct extensive training, to ensure that any use of force is carefully applied and objectively reasonable considering the situation confronted by officers, the association writes. Law enforcement officers are trained to treat all individuals, whether they are complainant, suspect, or defendant, with dignity and respect.

(9,287 posts)In Suffolk County, after this fiasco, will involve the plaintiff getting the trump video and the whole of the chain of command will be subpoenaed on their demeanor and receptive response to the Trump encouragement.
If I were a Suffolk Commissioner, I would start raising the taxes now to pay off the suits. Every lawyer in NY is on their way to Suffolk to find a brutality case with a cop who was on the video. This is defcon 5 level of stupidity, let alone the unconstitutional aspect which is horrendous.

(18,470 posts)Last year after a former member of our church made those cracks about Mrs. Clinton laughing about getting a rapist off I seriously considered criminal defense as a way of saying fuck you to that church member. I seriously considered leaving the church because of him but he decided to solve that problem himself and left after the election.
And now as well, so I can do my part in seeing any department who heeds the Orange Shit's advice is held accountable.

(33,643 posts)Because people in groups of their peers have a pronounced tendency to reflexively act in unison ... this is esp. true when the 'stakes for doing so' are relatively low, such as in an 'audience' type scenario.
And there's no QUESTION that Trump has utilized this quirk of human nature to great effect for many, many years.

(13,091 posts)They are trained to escalate violence.
They are trained to shoot to kill and lie about it.
They are trained to be terrified of those they are suppose to protect.
They are trained that their lives are more important than the lives of citizens.
They are trained that they are the judge, jury, and executioners.
They are trained that if they murder someone they will not be held accountable, even if
that murder is on video.
They are trained that the citizens tax dollars will protect them from civil suits.
They are trained that black and brown people are scary and always guilty of something.
They are trained that they deserve respect and they are to disrespect those they serve and protect.
They are trained that anyone not wearing a police uniform is a criminal.
They are trained to steal money, cars, houses, boats, etc. to finance their precincts.
Armed thugs in uniforms.
They have a lot in common with gangs.

(4,192 posts)plausible deniability. And so they can make these rosy statements about how they are here to protect us and ignore all the shit that is done in the name of "police work". Well, they made the statement above, let's see if they follow through.

(3,494 posts)Hard to get criminal charges for police officers but civil settlements have a much lower bar. If you have a bunch of ruffians making arrests you'll be laying out lots of money to settle civil suites. I'd bet the total amount of settlements and associated court costs is not something many police departments make public.

(10,495 posts)What we need is a special prosecution group who are in charge of investigating and prosecuting use of force complaints. Local D.A.'s need the police department and cannot be unbiased. Once they start having to go to jail for use of force misconduct these unarmed shootings and mysterious deaths in jail will dry up. Not completely, but drastically.
Cops feel entitled and above the law because they are the law.

(146,286 posts)against any limits on officers' authority. That has been the case in Minneapolis for some time. The police union's spokesperson consistently speaks against all attempts to control police violence, implement diversity training, and force officers to use body cameras in an effective way.
Most recently, he attacked the Mayor of Minneapolis on these issues. He has also regularly fought measures implemented by the former Chief of police.
So, that may be the answer to your question.
