Arab League ‘seeking UN help for Syria mission’
The Arab League may seek help from the UN to run its monitoring mission in Syria after criticism of the operation from the Syrian opposition.
Following a meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the Qatari prime minister who heads the Arab Leagues Syria task force was quoted as admitting mistakes had been made. Arab media reported that Sheik Hamad bin Jassim al Thani said his organisation would seek technical assistance from the UN.
There was evidence of the oppositions dissatisfaction with the mission in what appeared to be a parody mocking the monitors during a protest in Homs.
The observers arrived in Syria last week to verify a government commitment to reduce its military presence and free political prisoners. However, rights groups claim their presence is having little effect and that the bloodshed and repression continue.

The story details that the Arab League may seek "technical assistance" from the UN, so there is difference of the kind of "help" that the League asked from the UN in the case of Libya. Still, alienating the League is a risky course for Assad.
It continues to be amazing how long Syrians have continued to demonstrate for a more liberal form of government.

(1,367 posts)I seriously doubt that they will ask for any substantive assistance from the UN or west.
