Keystone XL foes rally in Lincoln ahead of hearings on pipeline route

LINCOLN — Sydney Beane and two of her four young children sat along Lincoln’s Centennial Mall and listened to speaker after speaker denounce the Keystone XL pipeline.
Around them, protesters raised signs bearing familiar messages about the controversial project. Keep your toxic sludge to yourself. People over pipelines. Water is life.
To Beane, who lives in Minneapolis, the project is personal. She’s fighting for her children’s future, she said.
“That’s the most important thing, taking care of our own,” she said. Beane was among the hundreds, including tribal leaders, climate advocates and landowners in the pipeline’s path, who rallied Sunday afternoon at the State Capitol.
