A relentless heat wave gripping parts of Europe this week has sent temperatures soaring to record highs for several days, causing at least two deaths and prompting authorities to issue severe weather warnings.
The heat wave has been dubbed Lucifer.
"It is just too much," real estate agent Sasa Jovanovic, 52, said during an early-morning walk in the Serbian capital of Belgrade, where it was forecast to hit 39 C Saturday. "Sometimes it feels as if I cannot breathe."
The extreme heat stifling Serbia, Romania, Croatia and parts of Spain, France and Italy has fuelled wildfires, damaged crops, and strained energy and water supplies. Authorities in some areas issued traffic restrictions and banned outdoor work during the hottest part of the day.
Spain's national weather service on Saturday issued an emergency warning for high temperatures in 31 of the country's 50 provinces as forecasts predicted temperatures of up to 44 C.

(76 posts)Vermont isn't exactly tropical, but we do get warm in the summer, 80's and low 90's, although it's generally only a day or two here and there. No real extended heat waves. For the most part, we haven't seen much of those temperatures yet in 2017.
We don't have air conditioning and just use window fans at night to sleep; so far this summer we have needed the fans exactly twice. I'm loving this, because I hate hot weather, but I'm not sure how happy the heat-loving garden plants are.
Both the husband and I have extended family in Europe and we've been getting an earful about the heat this year. A revolving door of cousins and friends are arriving over the next few weeks for holiday and they're pretty happy about getting away from the heat.

(12,882 posts)we've had them EVERY DAY (save for three) since the end of May. This is SO, not normal here! Up thru last Summer, we'd see 3 - 5 - even 10 days of 100F or more in the afternoons. Then we'd get a weeks respite of high 80s to low 90s. But not this year so far. It's just been TORRID! Anything you want to get done outside, you'd better get out early to do. Our 15-year old AC system has served valiantly and we keep our fingers crossed that it continues to do so. In the 28 years we've lived here, it's never been like this.

(76 posts)about a heat wave in Germany when I was really small. It was pretty standard at the time for us Germans to wear lightweight wool even in summer, but this particular summer was really hot and people were passing out right on the streets in our home town. I don't remember which year and Mom's gone now so I can't satisfy my curiosity by looking up what the temps actually were then.
