The ad is clearly designed to shore up support among people the GOP likely can already count on next year: rural Missourians who heavily supported Trump's election last year.
Republican campaigns in some areas of the country are distancing themselves from the controversial president. But the fact that Trump won Missouri by almost 20 points while Republican Sen. Roy Blunt, in the same election, held onto his seat by only about 3 points indicates that Trump is an asset rather than a liability among Missouri Republicans.
Still, why the GOP focus on rural voters the party already has in its corner? Part of the answer might be McCaskill's unusual early strategy of high-visibility events in rural areas, a move that appears designed to soften her image there.

(7,300 posts)She burned her bridges with progressive Democrats and rural conservatives hate all things Democratic. This will be interesting to see how the Democratic Party handles this. Unfortunately, I see a GOP pick up because KC and St Louis probably won't be able to carry her this time around.
