Doesn't look good to later downgrade charges, then they are accused of being overzealous or politically motivated.

Also potential for Federal charges I assume. Terrorism would be Federal I believe.

you have to charge first-degree murder by grand jury indictment; and so the initial charge is almost always going to be second-degree murder, by complaint. It can get upgraded by indictment later if the evidence supports it.

and down through assault with a deadly weapon and so on and so forth.

Saying it was any kind of an accident is going to be a hard sell, even in the south.

and is likely the most serious charge available in the state, other than first degree murder.

There are other lesser offenses that are also considered 'criminal homicide' so this is not somehow a downgrading of the charges, if that is your concern.

it's loaded with racists and trump voters. I know he's not from southern Ohio (Kentucky I believe), but parts of southern Ohio might as well be in the south. I'm from NE Ohio and we always disowned most of southern Ohio because of their backwoods mentality. I have a female relative who's 79 years old who grew up in W. Virginia but has lived in Ohio for most of her life and she still uses the "n" word. She's also passed that lovely trait down to her two hateful "children" who are in their 50's.

and we still get people in my store occasionaly using slurs, usually driving in from a bit north. Dealt with a guy that was starting to get violent a few days ago.

The KKK had a huge presence in Ohio at one time, and this year stated they wanted to make a new push into Ohio.

While speculation still surrounds Fields’ motives, available photography appears to show Fields present at the UTR event with members of Vanguard America, a racist right wing organization that helped Kessler organize the event.

The banner image of a Facebook page that appears to belong to Fields features the Othela rune, popular among Neo-Nazis and the far right.

In order to convince a jury, the DA needs to show that he intended to cause harm to others. His defense will be that he was attacked and that he panicked.

Good for SPLC to find and publicize these photos.

They say he was scared by the protesters.

They are trying to protect him before any facts are known.

Vanguard America, disavowed any knowledge of Fields, Jr's existence via twitter. You'd think they'd be proud of a member who actually managed to kill and injure "the enemy". I guess they're scared of being named as co-conspirators in a homicide and going to jail.
