North Korea holds off Guam missile launches as Kim Jong-un calms tensions
Source: Guardian
Kim Jong-un appeared on Tuesday to signal a pause in the escalating war of words with Donald Trump, saying he was prepared to watch US actions in the region a little more before ordering a planned launch of North Korean missiles aimed at the US territory of Guam.
The North Korean leader was quoted by the state press agency KCNA after conducting a tour of the countrys missile command. But he warned he could still order a missile launch aimed at the seas around Guam if the US carried out further provocations.
The United States, which was the first to bring numerous strategic nuclear equipment near us, should first make the right decision and show through actions if they wish to ease tensions on the Korean peninsula and prevent a dangerous military clash, Kim said, according to the KCNA report.

Good news.
I think the US and South Korea need to hold off on war-practice exercises this week. We need to take actions of backing off too.

(17,984 posts)Right now he is going to take any "win" he can to cancel out the Charlottesville fiasco. And just wait for the idiot followers to lap it up.

(17,984 posts)20 to 1 odds he boasts about his accomplishment as a great negotiator/diplomat. Because he only understands the unilateral perspective. He doesn't get that he is just one of many players. His base does not understand this point as well. He'll present himself as the lone wolf who single handedly prevented WW3. It will make us all sick on DU, but let's hope it does not piss off Kim Jong Un to the point he goes ahead with launch.

(13,583 posts)Now isn't the time to keep ratcheting up the tension. We can handle a nuclear NK just as we did a nuclear USSR, without going to war or wantonly provoking the other side. If you're itching for a nuclear exchange, you're sick.

(13,583 posts)As for actual threats, we handled being under constant "threat" from the USSR for decades without going to war. So we can do the same thing with North Korea.

(5,586 posts)Those are long planned, announced well in advance, and necessary to force effectiveness and cohesion, especially between multiple militaries and multiple military infrastructure, like what's in place between US and the RoK.
Nobody will be surprised by anything. We had exercises in Germany and throughout Europe all the time in the Cold War. If North Korea wants to be a functioning member of our global society, this is what states put up with.
