Maryland governor calls for removal of Confederate statue
Source: Washington Post
ANNAPOLIS, Md. Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan is asking for the removal of a statue of the Supreme Court justice who wrote a decision upholding slavery that sits on the front law of the state house.
Hogan said in a statement on Tuesday that he believes removing the Roger B. Taney (TAW-nee) statue from the State House grounds is the right thing to do.
The Republican governors statement comes a day after Speaker of the House Michael E. Busch, a Democrat, said the Confederate monument doesnt belong at the state house in Annapolis.
Hogan says he will ask the State House Trust to immediately remove the statue.

(45,410 posts)there are many Americans whose heritage is not represented in statues. The confederate/racist ones could be put in private museums if rich racists want to pay for it. Not in public areas paid for by the taxes of Americans whose ancestors were enslaved by such people.

IMO, these were among the worst. Not only was it Dred Scott awful decision, but Taney's words were particularly vile. The Baltimore mayor/city council decided over the weekend to take the one there down, along with three others monuments. (Although Maryland did not secede, there were a lot on Confederate sympathizers, and slavery was still legal there.)
