Jewish Trump Officials Silent on Presidents Defense of Anti-Semitic Protesters

Source: MSN/New York Times

WASHINGTON — Jewish members of President Trump’s administration remained largely silent Wednesday after Mr. Trump came to the defense of nationalist and right-wing protesters in Charlottesville, Va., who had chanted anti-Semitic slogans and demeaned the president’s Jewish son-in-law.

Gary D. Cohn, the director of the president’s National Economic Council, who is Jewish, was described by several people close to him as “disgusted” and “deeply upset” by the president’s remarks. But Mr. Cohn has not publicly expressed those views.

Steven Mnuchin, the secretary of the Treasury and also Jewish, stood silently behind Mr. Trump on Tuesday as the president said there were “very fine people on both sides” at the Virginia incident. Mr. Mnuchin has not said anything since about the president’s remarks.

And Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law, who is also Jewish, has been silent about Mr. Trump’s comments. Ivanka Trump, Mr. Kushner’s wife, who converted to Judaism, said in a tweet on Sunday, “There should be no place in society for racism, white supremacy and neo-nazis.”

The woman who died and the people injured were not necessarily Jewish or Mexican or anything like that. Just normal decent people protesting against nazis. They're even going after activists who visit websites to organize protests.

He's called Trump's comments on Charlottesville a"little squabble" and the reaction "overblown."

So while resignation would be ideal (and expected), at least maybe silence is preferable to speaking the totally wrong thing.

Almost the ENTIRE conversation, up until the last few days, have been about racism. Almost NO ONE, no news sources or people, have even bothered to mention anti-Semitism! Look at the posts here since events started! Now, everyone is demanding the Jews from this administration "speak". Where were all the calls for the other minority members of this administrations to "speak on command"? When I see articles like this it reminds me how lowly Jews are thought of, and treated. Initially, the overt anti-Semitism was ignored, now, that it is in the open, they demand the Jews to "speak". What's worse, the ones angry at these Jews for not speaking, start in with anti-Semitic memes of their own, usually revolving around money. The irony seems lost on too many!

Singling them out as "not speaking out" is pointing a finger, just singling them out at all is disturbing. Anyone who willingly works with Trump is complicit, regardless of their race, religion, or ethnicity. No need to single out any group. There are actually a few other minorities in his cabinet and no one is pointing a finger at them, or at the non-minorities, who, if anyone, have more duty to speak out as they have less to fear (car attacks notwithstanding). And, I've seen reporters over and over saying Trump cannot be anti-Semitic because some of his kids are Jewish. Well, Hitler had Jewish relatives as well.

Sadly, it took actual Nazis marching chanting "blood and soil", and "Jews will not replace us" before they snapped to just who and what the Nazis were.

These are seriously messed up times we're living in. We should have learned and evolved way beyond this point by now, but apparently we haven't. Now the Jews need to speak out and renounce these Nazis... um, pretty sure they've been doing that their entire lives people. I know I've been seeing it, and I've seen so very many rabbis speaking out in papers and social media since the Nazi march.

that's the difference. They have the resources and influence to make policy, pass laws, and assign personnel and budget towards implementing it.

But I do suspect Gary Cohn and few others may be sensible until proven otherwise. Wouldn't you want people in a position of influence to use it for good?

I want everyone to speak. Groups and media have contacted every congressperson and administration official for comment. The many silent ones speak louder than the few who have condemned it.
