"Leaker Bannon" never 'intended' for free-wheeling interview to be on record: report

In a fascinating interview with the American Prospect on Wednesday Steve Bannon called white nationalists a collection of clowns, undercut the White House position on North Korea and argued he wants the left to talk about racism everyday. But according to a report by Axios, the presidents chief counselor thought that interview was off the record.
Axios reports Bannon told associates he didnt intend to be interviewed by the American Prospects Robert Kuttner, and did not believe the reporter would write a story with his quotes.
Since Steve apparently enjoys casually undermining U.S. national security, Ill put this in terms hell understand: This is DEFCON 1-level bad, a colleague of Bannons told Axios.
What will Kelly do when he sees this? another colleague asked, referring to new chief of staff Gen. John Kelly, who was brought on to bring order to Donald Trumps chaotic White House.

Steve Bannon thought he wasn't giving an interview

Steve Bannon's White House colleagues can't believe what they're reading tonight and here's the twist: neither can Bannon.
The White House chief strategist has told associates he never intended to do an "interview" with an editor at the American Prospect, a left-wing publication.
Bannon has told associates that he admired the author's stance on China, and so called the journalist, Robert Kuttner, on Tuesday, to discuss his piece. Apparently Bannon never thought that the journalist might take his (very newsworthy) comments and turn them into a story. It's Anthony Scaramucci all over again (minus the curse words.)
The result is not good for Bannon, who is already under pressure, with colleagues lined up against him and a president who agrees with him ideologically but tells associates he thinks Bannon is a leaker.

I'm still fleshing out how I feel about all this, but I'm not seeing this as an 'oops' yet at this point.

(29,322 posts)Bannon was at risk of being fired but that press conference was pure Bannon. That maybe so about cover but odds were he was going to be fired then Trump channeled Bannon so he feels safe.

(19,187 posts)filed under the well used Trump heading, "fake news". They'll say Bannon never said ANY OF THOSE THINGS, and this "alt-left leaning" reporter saw a chance to make a name for himself, and took it.
That's one way this could be handled. Trump would get to use his new tag line of "alt-left" (whatever the hell THAT means!) again, the Trump team would get to dump on the media again with their "fake news" moniker, and the pitifully under-informed Cult45ers would get MORE ammunition to support their "hate the left" campaign. All lies, of course, but that's what Trump does best: he lies.

Till now, I'd only heard of the "clowns" and "fringe" comments, and I thought "that's clever spin, downplay the significance and seriousness of the white nationalists, without a direct condemnation of their essence". This wasn't a conversation he thought was all off the record.

Not an "oops" like he's saying now. You never know with this guy though.

So unmanly.
Maybe this is a deliberate set up on the part of Bannon and the republican Draft-Dodger-in-Chief so the KGOP will have some "cover" for canning his horrid ass.
In any event, sad.
