Confederate memorials being removed at Wisconsin cemetery

Source: Associated Press

Ivan Moreno, Associated Press
Updated 3:18 pm, Thursday, August 17, 2017

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The mayor in traditionally liberal Madison, Wisconsin, has ordered the removal of a cemetery's monuments to Confederate soldiers, saying the Civil War was "a defense of the deplorable practice of slavery" and "an act of insurrection and treason."

One of them, a plaque called "Confederate Rest" that lauds the Confederate soldiers buried at the Forest Hill Cemetery as "valiant," was taken down Wednesday. The other, a large stone monument that lists the names of the soldiers, will require heavy machinery to be removed, Mayor Paul Soglin told The Associated Press on Thursday.

"We will reinstall a proper marker with their names but one that does not speak of the Civil War as an act of heroics by the Confederate insurrection," Soglin said.

His decision to have the monuments taken down comes as cities nationwide are removing Confederacy-related ones following last weekend's deadly confrontations at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

mckenna and dan something in the morning along with the national 'talent'

dan something(former NY cop) really goes after the 'commie' radical democrat, liberal, left, professor, student, etc

commie this commie that and as a local depends heavily UW to keep broadcasting sports on his station. all UW'd have to do is think about looking for alternatives (they broadcast on 5 limbaugh and 3 hannity stations) and some of those stations would have to find other programming.

Are Wisconsinites unaware that Wisconsin was (and is) part of the Union, and fought against the Confederacy?

and died here. Lots died during their imprisonment. Many arrived with festering woulds and gun shot wounds. Shipping bodies barely was feasible in time of war. So buried here.

Medicine as we know it now barely existed back then. Anyway, there was a brief segment on NPR-Wis public radio about this a few days ago (think it was npr but not sure).

Buried here lie the bodies of the traitorous Confederates who sought to rend our nation apart in support of the evils of slavery. - ?

We can offer the bodies to the families if known to bury on private land, if not claimed grind them up into kitty litter or something.

There's no need for any civilized society to remember the names of those who fought to destroy it and keep people enslaved, is there?

While there was much talk about racism during the Clinton and Obama administrations after just seven months in office Trumps actions lead to the eradication of Confederate monuments from public view. We expect more great things from Trump's first term.

Removing cemetery monuments is in very bad taste, if not absurd.
