Salvation Army, Red Cross, Susan G. Komen abandon Trumps Mar-a-Lago
By Drew Harwell and David A. Fahrenthold August 18 at 12:55 PM
The Salvation Army, the American Red Cross and Susan G. Komen on Friday joined a growing exodus of organizations canceling plans to hold fundraising events at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, deepening the financial impact to President Trumps private business amid furor over his comments on Charlottesville.
The major exits now mean seven of the clubs biggest event customers have abandoned it in a matter of hours, likely costing the Trump business hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost revenue or more.
The Red Cross said it would cancel its annual fundraiser at the club because it has increasingly become a source of controversy and pain for many of our volunteers, employees and supporters, the charity said in a statement Friday. ... Susan G. Komen, the nations largest breast-cancer fundraising group, said Friday it would seek another venue after hosting its Perfect Pink Party gala at Mar-a-Lago every year since 2011.
And the Salvation Army, which has held a gala at the club every year since 2014, said in a statement that it would not hold its event there because the conversation has shifted away from its mission of helping those in need. ... The Autism Project of Palm Beach County also said Friday that it is no longer planning on hosting an event at the club, president Richard Busto told The Post Friday. The group has held Renaissance Dinner galas at the club every year since at least 2008.
....
The Trump Organization did not respond to requests for comment.

So many groups are leaving that it's hard to put them all in four paragraphs.
I saw a tweet, that I now cannot find again, in which the author expressed the hope that pretty soon, *****'s properties would be so void of other customers that the only uses for them would be to store Confederate statues and nuclear waste.

(128,370 posts)because their excuse was that Mar-a-Lago once belonged to their founder and they have had it there for 60 years (Drumpf bought it in 1985).

That leaves the you-know-who's. Not that they could find enough change under their sofa cushions to meet a minimum deposit.

(10,419 posts)and was on to their game in my salad days.
There are many worthy charities out there who truly do good work and direct their proceeds to those in need.
Give directly to them.

(53,061 posts)I had a friend from college who I met some years ago and he stayed in the small town where the college was located and I wondered why didn't go to graduate school like the rest of the people in our group, he was a very smart guy and ambitious.
He levelled with me telling me that he married the daughter of the local AAA organization.
I said isn't that a non profit and he laughed.
AAA officers aren't chosen by membership but by the board that perpetuates itself like a business.
And the salaries? Unbelievably high. In this small city he said that the top family member was over $ 300k but the trick is that all of the family members are on the payroll.
I asked him how about AAA of Southern California, he said it would be millions a year.
A lot of the people at AAA make commissions from insurance sales and aren't paid by membership dues.
He said that once he found out what he would be inheriting he couldn't afford to leave.

So, yeah, let everyone boycott. His so-called fortune is a house of cards anyway.

(48 posts)He thought that customers would be motivated to do business with him to bask in his tremendous presidential aegis. Instead, customers can't afford to be linked with him.

(6,924 posts)I can excuse the Red Cross due to their history, I abandoned Susan Komen over the Planned Parenthood debacle. (Betsy DeVos did that nasty piece of work).
Anyone who did not abandon anything to do with him after the things he said during the campaign, should re-examine their ethics. Doing anything that makes him money is inexcusable.
It's not like this is a new revelation about the trump family. They have showed their true colors for years.

(14,488 posts)I agree, TN, especially considering how he's screwed charities for years with so-called "contributions". And, why do these charities need to hold events at such a high-dollar facility?
Oh well, he can always have NRA and KKK events there until high-water wipes out the joint!

(9,865 posts)....at Mar-a-Lago in the first place, giving business to this sexist and predator?
Not to mention that the Army is supposed to be for poor people---how can they afford such expensive events? There's lots of ways to honor the Board and donors in ways that are truly meaningful and not these gaudy, Vegas-lite champagne parties.
The Mercer's and other richies will abandon him soon because Bannon is their boy and they see that Trump is a failure.
By the time Trump is done, he'll have just his base to support his $$$$ ventures and of course they don't have the mega-bucks.
It's like watching the Hindenberg.

(9,865 posts)....I think about it, the angrier I get that these groups are always hitting me up for money.
There's so many high-profile, fun, but mission-enhancing ways they could have their annual celebration. This is what gives lots of charities a weird reputation.
