Ed Gillespie circulating petition to keep confederate statues

Source: The Hill

BY MAX GREENWOOD - 08/29/17 12:36 PM EDT

Republican Ed Gillespie is circulating a petition opposing the removal of Virginia's Confederate statues and monuments.

In an email to supporters Tuesday, Gillespie, who's running for Virginia governor, cast efforts to remove Confederate statues from public land as an attempt to erase history. The email was posted on Twitter by The Atlantic's Clare Foran.

"My opponent, Democratic Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam has promised to do everything he can to remove Virginia's Confederate monuments and statues if he is elected governor," Gillespie said in the email. "I think we should keep them up," he added. "We should teach history – NOT erase it."

Both Gillespie and Northam, his Democratic challenger, have said that the decision to keep or remove Confederate statues should be made at the local level.

Gillespie was fairly wishywashy on this during the primary. This was Stewart's main theme. Gillespie barely beat him. They're out there and Ed knows he has to get them.

"We should teach history – NOT erase it."

Like the civil war was over state's rights?
That the confederate flag is about a proud heritage?
That blacks were better off as slaves in the U.S. vs. living free in Africa?
That blacks "were introduced to Christian salvation, and reached the greatest levels of freedom and prosperity (they) have ever known? (Buchanan)
That &quot no) people anywhere has done more to lift up blacks than white Americans"? (Buchanan)
That "...government (didn't free) our slaves we had in this country. ...It was the hand of God touching the hearts of man that freed those slaves.” (Virginia councilman.)
That "Black people (were) worse off under liberals than slavery or Jim Crow"?
That the three-Fifths Clause is actually an ‘Anti-Slavery Amendment’?
That it was about nullification?
That Hitler was just "misunderstood"?
That it was about differences between cultural/political/economic forces that shaped both the North and the South?
That the that American flag is more racist than Confederate flag?
That Confederate President Jefferson Davis’ inaugural address belongs together with the first inaugural of Abraham Lincoln?
That John Calvin was instrumental to the formation of our nation?
That the terms church and state are interchangeable?
Skip Thomas Jefferson and replace him with St. Thomas Aquinas, John Calvin and William Blackstone?
That it is OK to defy gun laws because Second Amendment is 'Like the Bible'?
That Freedom of the Press Is 'Granted in the Second Amendment'? (Gohmert)
That Muslims are not protected by the First Amendment? (Hice)
That the First Amendment only protects Christians? (Moore)
That "Dred Scott decision ‘is still the law of the land’ regardless of 14th Amendment"? (Huckabee)
That the internment of Japanese Americans was sound military judgment made on the basis of solid intelligence?

Like that "history", Ed?
