Trump attacking freedom of the press: U.N. rights boss

Source: Reuters

GENEVA (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump’s criticism of journalists amounts to an attack on the freedom of the press and could provoke violence against reporters, the United Nations’ human rights chief said on Wednesday.

Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein said Trump had also made worrying remarks about women, Mexicans and Muslims and went on to question the president’s approach to immigration and decision to pardon former Arizona lawman Joe Arpaio.

“It’s really quite amazing when you think that freedom of the press, not only sort of a cornerstone of the U.S. Constitution but very much something that the United States defended over the years is now itself under attack from the President,” the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights said.

“It’s sort of a stunning turnaround. And ultimately the sequence is a dangerous one,” he told a news conference in Geneva.

The public is guaranteed the right to a free press, a press unhampered and unrestrained by the government, or a self serving tyrant. The Constitution makes no restraint on what, or how the press covers current events, so Fox and Breitbart have the same protections as MSNBC and CNN.

Trump doesn't want investigative journalism, he wants a commemorative press release to feed his ego. He can't withstand reporters who challenge his lies, question his legitimacy or mock his childish behavior. The more the press exposes him as the bumbling, incompetent, lying fool that he is, the more Trump will become unhinged and retaliate.

Its almost comical, but in the end, Trump is his own worst enemy and we are fast approaching his Colonel Jessup moment.
