Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK), a high-ranking Republican who sits on the House Budget and Appropriations committees, on Wednesday warned President Donald Trump against publicly attacking Republican senators.
Youre not going to bully United States senators, this isnt the Apprentice, Cole told the Associated Press. You cant look at them and say youre fired, youre going to need their vote and you oughta remember that theyre going to be at the table in every major deal you need for the next three years. So I just dont think thats a productive way to proceed.
While Republican lawmakers have been away from Washington, D.C. for the August recess, Trump has gone after several Republican senators. His feud with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) spilled into the open, with Trump publishing tweets chastising McConnell for failing to pass Obamacare repeal. Trump has also launched attacks against Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), who recently published a book critical of Trump.
When Congress returns in September, lawmakers must tackle several must-pass bills, including legislation to fund the government and to raise the debt ceiling. They will likely push for an aid package to fund recovery in Texas and other parts of the south following the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. Trump has also pushed for the funding legislation to include money to build a border wall, and he will need all the support he can muster in the Senate, which has a slim majority of just 52 Republican senators.

(10,279 posts)The energy and chemical sectors of the Gulf Coast require massive social aid now. Potable water, food, fuel, shelter, electricity, medical services, infrastructure repairs.
The Repugs wanted control and they have now got problems that are becoming disastrous to the Union. It is time for them to act like compassionate humans. Big challenges need big solutions.
1. Free health care for all, now.
2. Build suitable shelters, now -- get people out of tents before winter.
3. Stop the wars, now.
4. Kill the stupid idea of a border wall, now. Time for the man-baby to grow up or get out.
5. Bring the troops home and put them to work on civil projects.
6. Tax the rich and make abandoning USA very expensive. You can leave, but your money goes to the US Treasury.
7. Bring American companies and jobs home, now.
8. Pay livable wages.
These jobs are too big for Republicans, who have never done anything that is big and important. We will most likely have to wait for the 2018 election to elect DEMs with a shared vision. Their first task will be to sweep out the president and v.p. and make the DEM Speaker of the House the president.
Painful that the desperate folks will have to wait for the next election.
