U.S. bombers fly off North Korea's coast in show of force
Source: REUTERS
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancer bombers escorted by fighter jets flew in international airspace over waters east of North Korea on Saturday in a show of force the Pentagon said demonstrated the range of military options available to President Donald Trump.
This is the farthest north of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) any U.S. fighter or bomber aircraft have flown off North Koreas coast in the 21st century, underscoring the seriousness with which we take (North Koreas) reckless behavior, said Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White.

(13,485 posts)but NK could likely have Seoul in an hour. Would Trump nuke Seoul as well? Do we not think Kim has prepared a shelter for himself and his regime with control of his missiles? I'll admit logic is not the way these guys play ball though so who knows.

(8,873 posts)they can level Seoul in an hour but Trump doesn't care about that one way or the other. The DMZ is a choke point for moving troops, a death trap really. I spent a year there.
EX500rider
(10,832 posts)Range Only about 1/3 of Seoul is presently in range from artillery along a DMZ trace. The northern reaches of Seoul within artillery range have much lower population densities than Seoul proper;
Numbers Even though KPA has a tremendous number of artillery pieces, only a certain number are emplaced to range Seoul. KPA cant emplace every weapon near Seoul or the rest of North Koreas expansive border would be unguarded and even more vulnerable. Moreover, an artillery tube immediately reveals its location as soon as it fires. Therefore only about two-thirds of artillery will open fire at a time. The rest are trying to remain hidden;
Protection Artillery shelters for twenty million people exist in the greater Seoul metropolitan area. After the initial surprise has worn off, there simply wont be large numbers of exposed people. Even during the initial attack the vast majority of people will either be at work, at home, or in transit. Few people will be standing in the middle of an open field with no protection whatsoever available anywhere nearby.
Secondary Factors
Dud rate the only numbers availableto the DPRK as well as the rest of the worldindicate a dud rate of twenty-five percent. Its like immediately taking every fourth artillery tube away.
Counter-battery fires shortly after the KPA artillery begins firing, and the political decision has been made, South Korean artillery, Air Forces, and others will begin destroying artillery at a historical rate of 1% per hour. South Korea has had approximately 50 years to figure out where North Korean artillery tubes are emplaced using every sense available to man and machine.
Logistics in order to move south from the DMZ trace and place the rest of Seoul at risk, KPA must expose approximately 2,500 thin-skinned vehicles each day along three well-defined transportation corridors. Otherwise, KPA grinds to an almost immediate halt without a way to transport fuel, ammunition and spare parts needed to continue moving south. Alternatively, KPA can scavenge from ROK fuel stores and depots if they have not been previously destroyed.

(35,321 posts)threatening with no consequences. I remember before invading Iraq Rumsfeld said we
could take them out in hours and they would even welcome us as liberators. How many years were we there?
With the terrain and climate in NK we would be in NK for decades unless we would nuke them, it is not like a desert there like in Iraq.
Wars never come out like they do on paper once they get started.
North Korea does not have the ability to punch through the world's most miltarized border, beat the South Koreans and take Seoul. Not in an hour, not in a day, not in a week, a month, or a year. The South Korean army has been planning and training to ensure that this does not happen for more than sixty years.
In order for your scenario to be true, you would need to believe that
(A) N Korea was capable to doing a massive build up of armor, troops, materials, supply trucks to the border without raising any warning
(B) N Korea could establish air superiority sufficient to protect their troops after they crossed the DMZ
(C) Somehow N Korea could target all of the artillery that is pointed north and stop it, such that they could maintain supply lines to the south
(D) N Korean command and communications would stay in place despite the immediate air bombardment of N Korea that would take place
(E) the N Korean military can actually fight. This one might be true, but there is not a single officer in the N Korean army with any combat experience.
North Korea could do significant damage to the northern suburbs of Seoul, and could do non-targeted damage to the capital itself, but they aren't getting troops there and raising a flag. The best you might see would be some small commandos units sent into the capital to achieve some type of symbolic attack.

North Korea says rockets to U.S. 'inevitable' as U.S. bombers fly off North Korean coast
Michelle Nichols, Yara Bayoumy, Phil Stewart
6 MIN READ
UNITED NATIONS/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - North Korea said on Saturday targeting the U.S. mainland with its rockets was inevitable after Mr. Evil President Donald Trump called Pyongyangs leader rocket man, further escalating rhetoric over the Norths nuclear weapons and missile programs.
North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Hos remarks to the United Nations General Assembly came hours after U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancer bombers escorted by fighters flew in international airspace over waters east of North Korea in a show of force the Pentagon said showed the range of military options available to Trump.
Ris speech capped a week of rising tensions between Washington and Pyongyang, with Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un trading insults. Trump called Kim a madman on Friday, a day after Kim dubbed him a mentally deranged U.S. dotard.
On Saturday, the mudslinging continued with Ri calling Trump a mentally deranged person full of megalomania and complacency who is trying to turn the United Nations into a gangsters nest. Ri said Trump himself was on a suicide mission after the U.S. president had said Kim was on such a mission.
President Evil is holding the seat of the U.S.

I'm sick of this bullshit. The man is not going to grow up and he's incapable of learning since he thinks he knows it all.
I was talking to my 28 year old daughter tonight and ranting about Trump. She looked at me with world-weary eyes beyond her years and simply said plaintively and softly, "Mom, fuck Trump."
I was very proud of her attitude bur also ashamed she lives in a society that elects this type of pig.
