House of Cards Suspends Production on Season 6

Source: Variety

“House of Cards” has suspended production on Season 6, in light of recent sexual assault allegations leveled against star Kevin Spacey, Variety has confirmed.

“MRC and Netflix have decided to suspend production on ‘House of Cards’ season six, until further notice, to give us time to review the current situation and to address any concerns of our cast and crew,” said the companies in a statement.

Yesterday the companies announced that the sixth season would be the last for the series, which was currently in production in Baltimore. “Media Rights Capital and Netflix are deeply troubled by last night’s news concerning Kevin Spacey,” they said in a statement. Netflix and MRC also said that they had sent executives to Baltimore Monday to meet with cast and crew after actor Anthony Rapp (“Star Trek: Discovery”) told Buzzfeed in an interview that Spacey had sexually assaulted him when Rapp was 14 years old.

Spacey is not currently on set for “House of Cards.” He issued an apology for his “deeply inappropriate drunken behavior,” that was widely criticized given that he also used it to come out as a gay man.

1. Good! Spacey's use of his "coming out" as gay as some kind of excuse for his disgusting behavior...

is an insult to the entire LGBT community.

5. Agree 100%.

I remember when the Boy Scouts finally agreed to allow gay scouts, but refused to allow gay scout leaders. The implication was clear that they believed that a gay scout leader was more of a threat to the scouts than a straight leader.

What Spacey said perpetuates that garbage.

18. Yes, exactly... Spacey is detestable for his original offense and his subsequent defense.

15. That was just as insulting and disgusting as the act itself.

He definitely handled that extremely poorly and probably killed his career as a result.

26. Yes... and I sure as hell hope his career is over because of it...

not to mention the dispicable underlying offense.

28. Yeah he handled that very poorly.

Not only that, he threw the LGBT community under the bus and played into literally every fear that the Christian right have about LGBT people. It's insulting.

I will still watch the movies of his that I own and love, like Baby Driver and Horrible Bosses, and House Of Cards, but I won't watch or buy anything of his that is new.

4. I've never seen the show (I don't have Netflix) BUT

I would say, just kill his character off.

Why jeopardize the livelihood of all the other actors, tech people, props people, etc. etc. over one actor? Seems really unfair to me.

9. They actually should.

Spacey should be required to act a scene where he's a molestor using his power to overwhelm someone.

11. The show was dying anyway.

They seemed to be running out of ideas. The love affair between Claire and that sleepy, flat-affect author was fucking preposterous. And let's face it, it is impossible to compete dramatically with the political reality we all currently live in.

7. There'd be no series without Spacey's character, it's all about his lust for power

I have to admit, I didn't realize that the show was still in production. I thought that it was over a couple of years ago and didn't pay it any more attention. i don't imagine I'll take the time to catch up on it now either.

10. I think Robin Wright could carry it on her own as POTUS.

They could begin the episode with Frank's funeral and the plot could be he was murdered by someone he screwed over.

13. She could, indeed.

But, then, I still can't get around the fact that the show is dull compared to real life in Trumpland.

12. I thought last season should have introduced a Trump character.

Some completely obnoxious populist who would challenge Frank. You would actually root for the evil Frank to defeat him. I pictured that character being played by someone like Gary Busey or Dwight Yoakam (who is not crazy like Busey, but who is a fantastic actor who excels at roles like these).

24. And his production company

He's the force behind that show, from start to finish. It had already been decided, apparently (though not yet announced, before this week) that this would be the final season. But there was speculation about a spinoff.

The degree to which he carries the entire thing is quite remarkable. It's very disappointing that such a gifted actor is such a wretched human being.

Now, if it goes down, it will affect so many people who don't make the kind of money Spacey does.

23. Exactly. Why should cast and crew be punished for his behavior?

I'm a big fan of Robin Wright, and the writing and photography on that show are excellent. It would be easy to get rid of spacys character, he's kind of done anyhow.

21. I've never watched the 'cards', not sure if netflix can afford to stop one of their popular shows

all they have are the old star treks and CBS new streaming just said they're starting all star treks series.

I kind of feel bad for them both, one drunk to black out and the other remembering an assault 30 years ago at a casting party. Parents please, go with your kids to these parties.

22. If netflix cancels this, low level people lose their jobs, and Woody Allen, Polanski, others

will just hire Spacey.

These big guys never, ever seem to suffer the consequences. Ever.
