Trump starts paying his own legal bills on Russia probe: attorneys

NOVEMBER 17, 2017 / 1:59 PM / UPDATED 35 MINUTES AGO

Karen Freifeld, Ginger Gibson

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump has begun paying his own legal bills related to the Russia investigation and will no longer use political donations to his reelection campaign or the Republican Party to cover the costs, his attorneys confirmed.

Trump defense lawyer John Dowd said that following payments by the Republican National Committee (RNC), the president began paying the bills and now wants to make the party “even.”

The expenses cover Trump’s personal lawyers working on special counsel Robert Mueller investigates possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia in last year’s election, and whether Trump may have obstructed justice by firing Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey, among other actions. Moscow has denied meddling in the U.S. election, and Trump has denied any collusion or obstruction.

The RNC did not respond to a request for comment.

it's illegal. You can't use campaign funds to pay for personal legal bills. Likewise, the RNC can't pay them either since they aren't campaign related.

He could be prosecuted for that alone. He probably has to rep[ay all the costs to get "clear".

He doesn't do anything because its the right thing to do. He only pays bills using his own money when he has no choice.

As if that would give them any kind of deniability.

Sure I understand that the yahoo lawyers willing to work for a known deadbeat were losing all the time, but that doesn't justify what we learned last night (Trump is using DOJ lawyers for his personal businesses).
