WASHINGTONPresident Donald Trump announced Friday he was putting five more individuals on his list of candidates to fill any future Supreme Court vacancy, adding several conservative figures to a roster that has been cheered by his social conservative supporters.
Mr. Trump said during the campaign that he would only nominate Supreme Court justices from a list prepared by Leonard Leo of the Federalist Society and Heritage Foundation. The additions to the list, which brings it to 25 names, come as a convention of the Federalist Society, a conservative legal organization, is under way in Washington, D.C.
Two of the newcomers, Amy Coney Barrett and Kevin Newsom, were recently confirmed as circuit court judges in the Chicago-based Seventh Circuit and Atlanta-based 11th Circuit respectively.
Ms. Barretts candidacy drew objections from Democrats, who said they feared she would be hostile to abortion rights. Catholic groups countered that Ms. Barrett was being harassed for her Catholic faith, and heralded her confirmation on Oct. 31 as a significant win.
