Lecturer accused of harassing conservative student will no longer work at UNL

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Rick Ruggles

University of Nebraska officials announced Friday that new steps are being taken in relation to an incident involving a conservative student Aug. 25.

NU President Hank Bounds said the graduate student/lecturer who called a conservative student a “neo-fascist” for recruiting for Turning Point USA would no longer teach at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The World-Herald further learned that the lecturer, Courtney Lawton, will be released completely from employment when her contract expires at the end of the school year.

Bounds also sent Gov. Pete Ricketts and Nebraska’s state senators a letter that cites various actions that reflect “the importance of open conversation that respects each other’s differences” on campus.

One of those is to have Gallup do a survey to assess the campus environment for people of diverse political backgrounds on NU’s campuses in Omaha, Lincoln and Kearney.

Pity that the grad student was fired.

Wonder if NU will try to have a kumbaya moment? Tiki torches provided for all.

lecturers creating an environment that's not conducive to learning. We don't fight for freedom for the speech we like, but freedom of speech for all. Lecturers do not have a right to create a hostile environment for students because it limits the ability to have open debate on campus.

CIVILLY (no tiki torches or shouts of "blood and land&quot than have them sharpening their knives in private. It was hard for me to understand why the ACLU fought for the free speech of Nazi protesters in Skokie in the late sixties, but I do appreciate it now.

If they can't speak, someday we won't be able to either.

If they protest I want be able to counter protest.

That's weird..... where did the smiley face come from????

UNL has an area designated for these booths. Initially this woman put her booth up in the designated area but she wasn't getting a lot of traffic so she moved it into a prohibited area sure to have more traffic. When she was asked to move her booth back into the designated area she refused. Students complained about the booth blocking passage to class. This was a matter that should have been handled by campus security but when it dragged on this lecturer stepped in - a classic two wrongs situation. The fact that she was conservative had nothing to do wit the situation. It was her refusal to abide by campus rules that triggered this whole episode.

They are about to find out all about Conservative values when the GOP Tax Cuts make it impossible for them to continue going for school and being covered on their parents health insurance.

The GOP Tax Cut bill is going to come crashing down on college students and their parents. Doubly so if they manage to gut Obamacare at the same time. Sadly, it will do the same to all college kids - regardless of their political persuasion.

This monstrosity of a bill is going to hurt lots of folks starting they day it goes into effect. We need to be on the phones, email, and sending letters to our senators. They need to understand this vote is a career killer for them.

Not that I would call a student a fascist, but that isnt even necessary. I have a student who will probably complain about me because I refuted his right wing nonsense.

opt instead to fire the professor who dared to challenge the student's Fascist agenda. This is Trump's America in a nutshell, and why it sucks.

one of the states in the great white nationalist-racist territories west of the Mississippi River. Idaho, Montana, S-N Dakota, Wyoming, Utah. Can't speak against the superior white conservative, even if you are a white person with principle, integrity and most important...a conscience.

same type of state, though. Probably will be a border state when the new 21st century western-southern KKK confederacy is complete
