Michigan Rep. John Conyers denies sexual harassment settlements

Source: AP via Chicago Tribune

Longtime Michigan Rep. John Conyers on Tuesday denied settling a complaint in 2015 from a woman who alleged she was fired from his Washington staff because she rejected his sexual advances.

The website BuzzFeed News reported on Monday that the office of Conyers, 88, paid the woman over $27,000 to settle the complaint under a confidentiality agreement.

Conyers, who answered the door at his Detroit home, told The Associated Press that he knows nothing about any claims of inappropriate touching and learned of the story from television just hours earlier.

"I have been looking at these things in amazement," he said, referring to allegations of sexual harassment and assault being made against politicians and others.

All the facts aren't in yet, and I'm concerned that Rep. Conyers is in some serious trouble.

This isn't a bunch of your former staffers jumping on the #metoo bandwagon.

If there is a lie, it's fron the accusers or someone who forged documents. Buzzfeed wrote a story based on real sources.

They want us to demand resignation of our most powerful voices, based on nothing and nonsense. We need to unite behind our representatives and reject the bullshit until there is real evidence.

Conyers admits paying settlement, denies allegations

Tuesday afternoon, Michigan Rep. John Conyers released a statement again denying the allegations of sexual harassment, but admitting that he paid a settlement made. He clarified, "the resolution was not for millions of dollars, but rather for an amount that equated to a reasonable severance payment," and added that he will fully cooperate with an investigation.

Just to be clear, that means this wasn't a Russian "set-up".
