Ex-Stanford Swimmer Appeals Sexual Assault Conviction
Source: Reuters
A former Stanford University swimmer found guilty of sexual assault in California has appealed his conviction after serving a sentence that many condemned as an example of how the justice system fails to take such crimes seriously enough.
Brock Turner, then 19, was arrested in 2015 after two of his fellow students at the Northern California university saw him outside of a fraternity house on top of an unconscious woman. He was convicted of sexual assault the following year.
After serving three months of a six-month sentence, Turner was released early for good behavior. He had to register as a sex offender in his home state of Ohio last year, after leaving Stanford.
Turners lawyer, Eric Multhaup, said in papers filed on Friday in a California appeals court that a prosecutor in the trial incorrectly told jurors the sexual assault occurred behind a trash bin. The woman Turner was convicted of sexually assaulting was found near a garbage enclosure but not behind a trash bin, according to the appeal. Multhaup said that implying otherwise gave the impression Turner tried to hide his activities with the woman.

(2,190 posts)Persky had another abuse victim right before Turner. He had no time to listen to her, but plenty of time to be solicitous about her abuser.
"When she read her lengthy statement in court, the woman struggled at times, since English is not her first language. On multiple occasions, Persky asked her to speed up and finish her remarks.
"After she concluded, Persky said little about her speech. Instead, the judge and Chiangs lawyer discussed the timing of jail in what appeared to be an effort to ensure that the defendant would be released each weekend in time for work on Monday."

Here's a good example of why reading the whole article before posting is a good idea.
I was ready go off half cocked about this rapist but now i'm fully in favor of a new trail with a different judge might be the right thing for this young guy.

My hope is that an Appeal court was able to increase his sentence....

I hope his picture will always pop up everywhere
It was horrible what he did and how he raped her and left her by a dumpster....but even more disgusting were his claims later describing the assault of her and him acting like he was the victim.
I also hope he will never be allowed to competitively swim or compete in any competition.
