Economist Larry Summers: 10,000 people will die annually from GOP tax bill

Source: The Hill

Economist Larry Summers said Monday that roughly 10,000 more Americans will die each year if Republican tax-reform legislation passes and includes a repeal of the ObamaCare individual mandate.

"I think this bill is very dangerous," Summers said on CNBC's "Squawk Box."

"When people lose health insurance, they're less likely to get preventive care, they're more likely to defer health care they need, and ultimately they're more likely to die." The Senate passed its tax-reform legislation early Saturday morning. The upper chamber's bill includes a repeal of the individual mandate, while the House's tax-reform bill does not.

Summers's estimate is based on a Congressional Budget Office report that 13 million Americans would opt out of ObamaCare if the individual mandate is repealed.

And I think this number is low....because even people who won't lose their insurance immediately, may face stress and a tighter budget that will lead to more health problems.

Horrible...

The cost of treating poorly managed diabetes, high blood pressure and other chronic diseases has to be factored in. The cost of treating diseases at an advanced stage is far greater than catching diseases early through screenings.

Then there's the cost of people becoming disabled because of lack of quality healthcare. If someone who has diabetes and becomes blind in their 50s, they may be on SSDI for more than 10 years instead of being fully employed and paying taxes. The same goes for someone with undetected (or untreated) high blood pressure having a stroke.

What about the cost of babies born underweight or early because their mothers couldn't afford prenatal care? What about the cost of the babies born because the mother couldn't afford highly effective birth control?

You know how they say education isn't expensive when you consider the cost of ignorance? Well healthcare is expensive until you consider the cost of not having it, especially when you multiply it by millions. When people have high out of pocket medical bills, that money is pulled out of the economy.

I was part of the Not One Penny nationwide phone call today and you are doing what Ben said we all need to do. The bill is not a win, it is a disaster and we can stop it. There are still a few weeks left and the three things we must do...
1. Attend protests, town halls, etc and make sure the media is there, no matter how big or small it is. The media has been absent due to the non stop distractions. There are many important issues but this is our BIGGEST PRIORITY for the next few weeks.
2. Keep up the CALLS. They started late but eventually their staffers were busy ...call, tell your family and friends in other states to call too. (202)224-3131
https://www.trumptaxscam.org/
3. Social media is crucial. Retweet and share whatever you can. Send it to the media. Events, town halls, protests are occurring and over 100 are planned for this week alone. Bernie, Cory Booker, Indivisible, MoveOn have been going to Kentucky, Ohio and PA all weekend.

New info is already coming out. One new fact since the Fri vote is that there will be 1/2 trillion more dollars added to the deficit. 28% of Americans approve of the Tax Scam. This week Ryan will appoint Repub to his closed door "conference committee" and then we can target those reps. The house and senate have to "negotiate a compromise". What they voted on is different in each chamber. For now we know of 28 Rep congressmen who voted against one of the two bills/plans. We need to flip 23 of them. The Senate will need to be PRESSURED NON STOP...this means calling the 9 senators that were wavering. If we get Alabama we only need two more senators with Corker. This would be great. Also there is the threat of a govt shutdown by Fri., Dec. 8th.
We have been the catalysts of the grass roots efforts for a year and have stopped major legislation. We have a few more weeks until the holidays. After that we have to spread the word about what the GOP has done to the stability and future of our country with this tax cut for the rich and they are taking money from the sick and poor which will bankrupt millions and take over 13 million off of health care. Meanwhile tax cuts for multi million dollar corporations will not be trickling down at all and never will. The bill ensures that the country will be taxed more over the next 10 year (but not the corporations...you and me are paying).
Call (202)224-3121

We must HAMMER them on this bill. Put the pressure on these greedy, cruel bastards and DO NOT STOP!

The International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague has jurisdiction over crimes against humanity. Therefore should those who will be responsible ( assenting senators and congressman, and Trump) for these 10,000 deaths per annum (if the tax bill becomes law) be brought before the ICC and tried by it - and if convicted , be subjected to the same type of incarceration and odium meted out to prior ICC defendants found guilty of mass murders?

McConnel and Ryan have been painting a rosy picture that it’s all over except for a great (the Greatest!) photo op in the Rose Garden. Now that senators have actually read the TaxScam which passed with a bare majority, some of them are getting squishy. Susan Collins, for instance, wants to see what comes out of the reconciliation conference before she commits to voting for the TaxScam. It seems the promises McConnel made to her to secure her vote have no more substance than a fart in a whirlwind. Fiscal conservatives are in a quandary. For some of them, the TaxScam isn’t vicious enough. Others worry adding to the National Debt is really in keeping with their ideology even if it means a great windfall in jobs. Apparently, some of these critters find that Kool-Aid thin.
Let’s keep up pressure on all our congress critters. We need two senators to join with Corker to defeat the reconciled bill.
Call your Representatives. They all need to hear the wrath of voters. Especially those who are fervent supporters of the TaxScam like the protoplasm from Michigan’s 6th District. Keep calling senators. Collins is first on my list followed by Johnson, Flake, Sasse and Daines. Call Corker. Thank him for his principles. Tell all of them you support a bipartisan tax bill not one written by and for the 1% of Americans.
Collins (ME) 202-224-2523
Johnson (WI) 202-224-5323
Flake (AZ) 202-224-4521
Sasse Neb. (202) 224-4224
Daines (MT) 202-224-2651
Corker (TN) 202-224-3344
