Democrats are ready to embrace a class war and blame Republicans for starting it.
The GOPs controversial dual effort to revamp the health care system and tax code has convinced Democrats they should bluntly assail Republicans as the defenders of out-of-touch plutocrats, a message party operatives have already begun to poll-test, include in attacks ads, and use against vulnerable incumbents even before Saturdays passage of the Senate GOP bill. And rather than wince at the inevitable retorts that the party is trying to instigate a class war, leading party strategists say they welcome the attack confident the GOPs legislative priorities make them a more likely culprit in the publics mind.
If Democrats are worried about class war, well, the Republicans started it, said John Lapp, a veteran Democratic strategist. And bring it on. Quipped one party operative: If were eating the rich, they bit first.
An avowed focus on the middle class is part of a well-worn playbook for Democrats, who traditionally regarded themselves as the defenders of workers. But they think the message has fresh resonance now, in the face of the GOPs legislative agenda, and especially after President Donald Trumps populist campaign promised repeatedly to defend the working class.

(1,201 posts)elections will not be fair. The entire country polls left, and sides with dems on the issues yet repubs are the ones in office. Thousand of votes being blocked or stolen by Kobach's vote challenging, never counted, machines flipping votes but never for dems and dems silent about it till now. But they need to be loud about it so voting is easy, all votes are counted and we have voting holidays so everyone can get to the polls.
We also need to get the money out of our elections by making funding transparent and limited for a start.

(32,579 posts)Then let's fix gerrymandering, voter suppression and the hacking of the electronic voting machines. Then let's get the ACA back on track and rewrite the income tax laws so they make sense and don't steal our Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid benefits. Then let's fix the problems in education, the environment and rebuild our infrastructure.
... we can talk about class wars later.

(796 posts)but the other issues you list are symptoms of the rich vs poor class war our rich Reps and Sens have been waging for quite some time. we wouldn't be in this mess if the rich weren't buying the govt to get rid of teh poors. the first three you mention are outright attacks on the general citizenry, stealing elections and forcing perspectives that aren't real.

(3,515 posts)The issues you mentioned ARE the class war.

(5,730 posts)It should not be a hate the rich though, or we willnever win it. A lot of Repubs say they won't vote Dem, because they hate people who are succesful at making money.
No, we just want them to pay their fair share of supporting this country, especially since this country has supported them.

(10,279 posts)That's what the GOP just did to us on the Tax Bill. I will have to take out mortgages to pay my future Fed income taxes. We have to get mean enough to put rich Republicans into pain -- maybe bust a lot of them back into the middle class. Just like FDR did.

We're in hand to hand combat. Fighting for our LIVES literally. thuglicans are NOT playing. They fully intend to destroy what's left of a middle-class, take away health care from millions AND then go after Social Security/Medicare after they get through with their for the rich tax bill. CHIP is done as of December 31st 2017.
This is one time where Dems will HOPEFULLY mimic thuglicans and STAY ON POINT. Hammer the message home over and over and over again that thuglicans don't give a damn if people DIE, LOSE their LIVES, HOMES, WAY OF LIVES if this for the rich tax plan passes. Also, that it will add TRILLIONS onto the debt. Dems have to start talking up or be forever silent. It's bad enough that fatso will be able to appoint judges for LIFE onto these benches, and we know that they don't intend on ruling in a way that will benefit PEOPLE'S BEST interests.
Come on Dems, grow a pair. SPEAK UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dems don't need to get as filthy as 'them',
just use the strongest words available, succinctly constructed, to the hard hitting point.
MB something will trigger 'one's' emotion and whatever semblance of reason they have left (if any) would open him or her up to a 'lightbulb' moment.
IOW, "Here comes the dawn!".

(9,974 posts)If you look up " Conservative " in the dictionary, these words come up. I see no real conflict with " Liberal " principles. Should Dems start "soft messaging" these themes (particularly with some of our well respected "stars" - Obama, Clinton, Carter, Kerry, Gore), so that the Republicans react to this messaging with their real principles? Kindness is for suckers, thrift is for losers, caution is for wimps!

That's an awful analogy, I know. (I would never do that to a cute little froggie!) But it's apt. We're just now realizing the water is boiling and was being turned up for some time.

(15,635 posts)This has been a long time coming. Too many of us have been clamoring about it for 20 years already. It should not have taken this long and did only because too many people of all ages are on the precipice or already beyond.
The middle/working class has been the victim of class warfare for 3+ decades. It's about damned time.

(28,243 posts)I know I'm more than ready for the seemingly inevitable cultural and political conflict on our horizon. But I wonder if the Democratic Party as a whole shares that readiness. And I wonder just how much deeper into the sewer trump has to take our country, before all of us are committed to an effective fight to reclaim it.

(3,280 posts)It's win-win, honestly. Bernie did lots of good work raising money from the people. Democrats could do that if they took an aggressively anti-1% stance. Eschew the huge money donors and build from the grass roots up. Most of the big corporations will shy away and keep their money out of the ring publicly, and all the dark money will still go to Republicans, but then the Democrats will be able to say they're not beholden to big money interests.
Make the message, then stay on the message. Healthcare for all, education for all, cleaner water in poor communities, infrastructure to help struggling urban communities, outreach to women, POC, LGBTQ+, the Democratic base. Inclusiveness and progress. Have young leaders mentored by our elder statesmen and women and encourage engagement in oft-overlooked communities. Go door to door. These are all class issues. The 1% holds more wealth than the bottom 60%, but guess who has more votes?

(4,698 posts)How can fight a class war if our party won't ...
renounce corporate greed, corporate media, and corporate health care?

Comfortable "moderate" Dems don't have the will or the courage to put it all on the line for the working class and the poor. Ready? Not even...

(8,224 posts)If we are going to go there, and I think it is well past time we did, then go there. Be angry, push, incite, inflame, be passionate. Don't try to find out where the people are and be led by the polls, change the dynamic. Challenge people to think and act out, be colorful. Don't duck the occasional Howard Dean or Bernie Sanders because "they seem too angry" embrace them, push them to speak even stronger words. Do it (to quote Yoda -"there is no try" . Half measures on something like this is a waste of time, don't "act like" you give a damn, actually give a damn, and you will win.

I'm really sick and tired of this whimpering stance our side takes to most things. Only time one sees a show of strength is when we pick apart each other and we do it ruthlessly indeed especially when the target is a progressive or what they call far left.
