CSX CEO Hunter Harrison has died

Source: CNBC

CSX CEO Hunter Harrison has passed away at age 73, the freight rail company confirmed in a statement Saturday.

"It is with great sadness that we announce that E. Hunter Harrison, President and Chief Executive Officer of CSX, died today in Wellington, Fla., due to unexpectedly severe complications from a recent illness," the company said.

Harrison had taken medical leave on Thursday, sending shares of the third largest U.S. rail company tumbling in pre-market trading. Jim Foote was named acting CEO in his place.

Harrison had been suffering from an undisclosed medical condition that forced him to work from home some days and use an oxygen machine at times, according to the Wall Street Journal.

2. "Precision railroading" looks great on paper but is terrible for the people who actually have to do

it. Focusing on metrics and big data works only so well on certain types of lines. He instituted a culture of running the railroad for shareholders, not clients, customers or employees. He's the very example of someone leading the charge to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs, and leaving nothing but bloody feathers for those who run, schedule and manage the trains.

4. Wikipedia says he's only been working there since March 2017

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._Hunter_Harrison

Wikipedia says more of his career was spent at Burlington Northern RR and Illinois Central RR. Early retirement, then he came to work for Pershing Square Capital Management in mergers and acquisitions. Some lawsuits, proxy battles, contract breeches, etc. then he came to CSX as their CEO in March. This guy probably died very rich, but it looks like he screwed a lot of people along the way.

Just sayin'

5. Yes, CSX was the latest in his trail of destruction.

He's done the same thing wherever he goes.
