He parked his truck, got a shovel out of the back, and walked over to a patch of grass where two small orange flags marked a hole in the ground. He began digging in the frosted dirt. It was just after 8 a.m. and traffic was whooshing by, past the one-story strip malls, past the Big Chief Drive-In and church after church, including the hulking redbrick one lit up for Christmas next to the smaller buildings of City Hall. The parking lot of First Baptist ran right up to the grass where the mayor was digging, his breath visible in the cold air.
My answer
How about a slap in the face to every non-Christian service member who has given their ultimate sacrifice for this country and those that are currently serving in the military (Jewish, Islamic, Buddhist, Mormon, etc, etc. )

(4,078 posts)How can he square this statement:
"I don't push Jesus on nobody if you can't see Jesus in me, then I've failed," the mayor said. "I don't have a thing against Muslims. I don't see color. I don't hate anybody. But we do need to live a life that is pleasing to the Lord?"
...with working so hard to find a way to fly his precious flag in front of CITY HALL!
It's like saying "I hate the color blue," but then wearing nothing but blue every day.
Can you say "Cognitive Dissonance?"

(17,984 posts)I have a few like this in my extended family. They are told from a young age that Jesus was the son of God, was crucified and later flew up to Heaven. There is no way you can challenge them on this. It is absolute fact. More of a fact than rain is wet and the sky is blue. They are dumbstruck if you tell them you don't believe in Jesus. That shakes their little world, and they go off to pray for you to see the light.

(17,884 posts)Even as the flag at City Hall was lowered, other Christian flags began going up. People put them all over town, on porches, storefronts and the backs of trucks.
And that's perfectly fine. It is our constitutional right to publicly admit we subscribe to any number of brands of bullshit. BUT THE GOVERNMENT CANNOT ADVOCATE OR ENDORSE ANY PARTICULAR BRAND, PERIOD, FULL FUCKING STOP.
He imagined what a more Christian nation would look like. "Imagine a baptism of love," the mayor said.
Bullshit! We've seen christo-nut theocracies and the blood they've spilled. That's precisely why the founders set up our government as they did. Secondly, I know these people too well. I grew up in their cesspool of fundygelical crap. They couch their hate, exclusion and holier than thou bullshit in "love". It's a dodge. They love only their in group and hate everyone else. If they did actually live what they say they do, they wouldn't strive to shove their brand of shit down others throats. They've done so by force in the past and would love to do so again.

an end to tax giveaways to the wealthy and wars of foreign exploit.
That's just for starters. Do the Rs they vote for work for this? Of course
not, and these deluded sycophants could care less. After all, its the
nihilistic belief of pie in the sky after you die or 70 virgins or whatever.
Their works in this life show their true beliefs, as has been said before.
