As Fire and Fury is published, Europe openly debates: Is Trump still sane?

Source: The Washington Post

BERLIN — European commentary on President Trump is rarely flattering, but the cascading revelations alleged in Michael Wolff’s tell-all book “Fire and Fury,” drew an especially fierce response from a horrified continent.

“Is Trump still sane?” asked the Friday lead headline on the site of Germany’s most respected conservative paper, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. The piece was published under the topic “mental health.”

Meanwhile, British readers woke up to the Times of London's main front page headline that also wondered about the president’s stability: “Trump’s mental health questioned by top aide.”

“Donald Trump’s right-hand man openly questioned his fitness to serve and predicted that he would resign to avoid being removed by his own cabinet, according to a book that the US president tried to block yesterday,” wrote the Rupert Murdoch-controlled Times of London.

as he ever was. Nothing here is surprising at all. He only looks worse because he has been forced out of his comfort zone and his coping ability is overwhelmed.

All I know is, I'm just tired. It barely even registers any more. They could stuff Pat Buchanan in the White House and he'd act more presidential than the current inhabitant of the Oval Office.

NATO and UN destabilized, a far-right state and federal judiciary for the next generation, protections for at-risk communities gutted, profits for unbelievably wealthy people protected, and the USA's standing on the international stage diminished for years, perhaps decades.

It's dreadful, but in a perfect world most of our institutions would be turned upside down and rebuilt every few years anyway. We just wouldn't feel it and we'd get to keep all the good stuff.

Btw, I suspect the inability to trust American voters ever again, which we are earning in quadruplicate, will actually give way remarkably soon to the same old very human flaws and realities that lead other nations to lean on us in the first place. Money of course right at the top. We've supplied military protection to many other nations for decades, demanding a lot in return, but it worked for them and who'd want to trade their unlimited healthcare and nationally mandated paid annual vacations for big military capabilities and actions?

And if the world ends up somewhat less dependent on one superpower for military and economic stability, will that be all bad?

Sincerely, Pollyanna

It won't end up all bad. Hopefully the utter gutlessness of the GOP will be laid bare for all to see through all of this. And the only way out is through, at this point. I still think that things will get worse before they get better, but they will get better.

the Republicans destroy the ACA in the belief that single payer will rise up like a phoenix in its place sane? Yup, gotta assume most of them.

It's always far easier to imagine others are insane than apply that word to our own actions.

I took a picture of them to translate later in my hotel room and part of the title said he was insane and dangerous. This was March 2017. The author said it then!

from my niece in England, she just read the first installment of the book. It is being published each day in the newspaper. They can not understand WHY he is still in office. I told her it is because if he goes down, most of the republican party will go since they are up to their necks in this Russia mess. I predicted prison terms for Don Jr., Kushner, Pence, Ryan and McConnell. Also predicted tRump will be institutionalized in a mental ward. Many people are of the same mind frame. Make America Great Again, banish the gop.
