Trump book author Michael Wolff contradicts president, says he interviewed him

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The author of a deeply critical book about Donald Trump’s first year in office said on Friday he had spoken with the president while working on it, contradicting Trump’s assertion that he had never talked to the writer for the book and had authorized “Zero access” to the White House.

-snip-

The book, dismissed by Trump as full of lies, depicts a chaotic White House, a president who was ill-prepared to win the office in 2016, and Trump aides who scorned his abilities.

Wolff told NBC on Friday that he stood by his reporting and had talked to the president for the book. “I absolutely spoke to the president. Whether he realized it was an interview or not, I don’t know, but it was certainly not off the record,” he said on NBC’s “Today” program, adding that he had spoken to people who spoke to Trump on a daily, “sometimes minute by minute” basis.

Asked to clarify what he meant when he wrote that Trump’s entire circle questioned his fitness for office, Wolff said, “Let me put a marker in the sand here: 100 percent of the people around him ... They all say he is like a child. And what they mean by that is he has a need for immediate gratification. It’s all about him.”

Title of Jonathan Capehart's piece in the WaPo. A whole bunch of interviews were taped, even if it turns out none with Trump were.

"The swirl of OMG surrounding Michael Wolff’s new book, “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,” is unlike anything I’ve seen in politics. Ever. Sure, we’ve seen tell-all books and gasp-worthy revelations before from deep inside 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. But Wolff paints such a chaotic portrait of President Trump that we now know that the biggest nuclear button in the West Wing was the one on Wolff’s tape recorder."

Btw, here's a link to NY Magazine's really good article on the book.

It is very possible that he does not remember talking to Wolff or giving him access to the White House.

This only matters if Michael Wolff has a tape of his conversation with Donald Trump.

to being taped/recorded. So if Wolff had a recorder in his pocket, he could have kept it hidden and legally recorded all his conversations. But, more likely, those who talked to Wolff were either happy to or too dumb not to talk with a recording device in plain sight.

A reporter being interviewed by Joy who is sitting in for Chris (was working on something so I’m not sure) but he clearly stated that reporters saw him their all the time and that the type of badge he had was a permanent badge of the color that denotes someone with unlimited West Wing access.
