Trump cools to idea of taking on welfare programs, seeing little chance of success in Congress

Source: WP

President Trump has begun telling advisers that it will likely be impossible to advance legislation this year to reduce welfare spending and enrollment — a priority he previously embraced with the backing of House Speaker Paul D. Ryan and a number of conservative activists.

In conversations with aides and outside advisers in recent days, Trump has said his supporters would embrace the idea — but that it remains unlikely because the votes will not be there in Congress and it would be a difficult undertaking in an election year. Some Republicans want to reduce health-care, housing and food-stamp spending by making it tougher for beneficiaries to receive the dollars — such as through new work requirements.

But a number of White House officials and advisers have begun tamping down expectations for any overhaul of social safety-net programs, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has told Trump it’s a nonstarter in his chamber because he would need the support of Democrats who oppose the idea, a White House adviser said.

Abandoning an effort to scale back welfare programs before it even begins could disappoint conservatives who have been pushing the issue for years, although some said they understand it would be difficult to do in the current political environment.

the pukes will still do a lot of damage via whatever administrative law means they can exploit. For example, recently USDA issued a release stating basically that they are going to start turning over more control of food stamps to the states, which of course = make it harder for people in need to get help.

pukes never stop and if they can't achieve their aims out in the open they slither around doing so in the dark.

Still, it's good to hear that they have been scared off for now at the congressional level.

It's really quite basic, pay people enough to survive on and they won't need assistance from the government.

Republicans have the majority, they are responsible for what goes on. This sounds like they're going to reverse course now and start blaming Democrats for the GOP agenda fail.

GOP and Trump are TERRIFIED! That's what's going on. Election year. Trump scandals. Afraid they can't trash Mueller and cover it all up by investigating Hillary and the Clinton Foundation all over again. Soon they'll be back to Whitewater, with Monica redux thrown in for good measure.

This article sounds like a trial balloon, or a planted story to throw the opposition off guard.

They get a couple bucks back for each one they send in.
They won't rock the gravy train- especially where the poor are involved.
They want to whip on them and have somebody else pay the tab.

Don't be fooled. Ryan's gone on record saying 'I want this' ... and Trump needs something from Ryan (protection from investigation, and instead, investigations of Hillary/Mueller) ...

The Godfather is signalling "Hey, Kiss My Ring, Lyin' Ryan ... and I'll consider making your Ayn Rand-inspired, masturbatory fantasies of killing many 100's of thousands of people ... come true!"

Something where they get more money out of it, maybe. Or something that won't hurt them as much in the mid-terms.

He's said he's going to push for insurance companies selling across state lines, and being able to sell plans that don't meet the ACA criteria. Maybe that's it.

(BTW...what they've done w/healthcare is they've figured out a way to do it piecemeal, looks like. First, the mandate in the tax cut bill. Now to allow ins. cos to sell across state lines, and sell lower benefit plans. That's most of the ACA right there. )

Maybe a focus on Social Security and Medicare? Ryan has said they're going after that.
