Peter Preston, editor of the Guardian for almost 20 years and the driver behind its transformation into an international newspaper, has died at the age of 79, the Guardian reported Sunday.
Preston joined the Guardian in 1963 and led the publication as editor between 1975 and 1995, during some of its most dramatic moments, including a price war with the Independent following its 1986 launch and the Guardians acquisition of the Observer in 1993.
He continued to write for the Guardian and Observer as a columnist after resigning as editor. His last piece, on press and broadcasting, was published on New Years Eve.
Katharine Viner, editor in chief of the two papers, said he was a brilliant editor and generous and supportive ex-editor.
